When I was in high school, I took an English course that focused on mythology. We briefly discussed Star Wars, however the one thing I remember is the teacher talking about Luke's line about wanting to join the academy... Luke was referring to the Imperial academy. He knew nothing of how evil the Empire was- he just wanted to get off Tatooine. He refers to Biggs and Tank leaving- but they may have gone off to join the Empire- only Biggs appears meeting up with Luke at the end of ANH. Biggs may have ended up switching sides and fighting for the Rebellion. Besides I think it would be impossible for the Rebellion to have "recruiting stations" and training facilities that are so well known, even a farmboy from one of the most remote planets in the outer rim has heard of them. The Empire would crush them.

I watched ANH today, and there is no mention of what academy it is, but when the droids mention the rebellion, Luke jumps up and says "You know of the rebellion against the Empire???" really excitedly. Why would someone who is so excited by the rebellion join an Imperial Academy?!?!?
The "Academy" might not be as organised and advertised as everyone is assuming - it could be very secretive; it only takes one person to know about it, and then tell their trusted friends about it. They are on an Outer Rim world, and because the Empire has little influence out there, it is more likely that people would know about it. The Rebellion had to have a way of recruiting members, or else former senators would be flying the X-Wings!
I don't know, thats just what makes sense in my head. It just doesnt gel that Luke would be so excited about joining the Empire. And even if he was, he wouldnt be so quick to join the rebellion would he?

Well that does make sense. Yes it is not clearly said what Luke was talking about when he mentioned the academy. My English teacher was speculating as well. Luke jumping up about C-3PO being a part of the rebellion could just have been amazement- nothing ever happens on Tatooine, and Luke is starving for adventure. Now he has two droids in his possession that not only served aboard a starship, but have been participants in the battle against the Empire. Imagine Luke's excitement about the stories they could tell him (I'm sure he was convinced he was staying on Tatooine the rest of his life). I don't know about Luke's line about hating the Empire- he was talking pretty fast; spouting a bunch of excuses as to why he can't go with Ben to Alderaan. He probably realized he was letting Ben down (another person he idolized), and may have blurted that out so as not to upset Ben. It isn't until his foster parents are killed by the Empire (for no good reason) that he understands what the Empire is all about and what his true destiny is. Well... that's my take on it.

Sounds to me like Luke is just rationalizing reasons why he can't go to Alderaan when he says "It's not that I like the Empire, I hate it, but there's nothing I can do about it right now"... But if the base is that secretive, how would he know to transmit an application? The thing about the Empire is this - we're looking at 19 years after ROTS - the Empire has been in place for a while. It's simply THE form of government in the galaxy. Why would the Empire, who is in control of the entire galaxy & is pretty much unopposed except for a "ragged band of rebels" have to hide their training center & make it secretive? I mean, I'm sure it wouldn't be a system where you could just fly up & hang out, it'd be under surveillance & such, just like our own modern military bases. You guys have all raised some great points. So if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch them again...

I've found the missing piece of the puzzle about the mysterious Academy. On my Star Wars: Behind The Magic CD-ROM is a deleted scene from ANH. In it Luke says goodbye to Biggs on Tatooine. Here is the dialogue between the two: Biggs: "Luke, I didn't come back just to say goodbye; I shouldn't tell you this, but you're the only one I can trust. See... I may never come back and I just want someone to know."Luke: "What are you talking about?"Biggs: (whispering) "I made some friends at the academy; when our frigate leaves for one of the central systems, we're going to jump ship and join the Alliance."Luke: "THE REBELLION!?"Biggs: "Quiet down will ya? You've got a mouth bigger than a meteor!"Luke: "I'm quiet, I'm quiet! Listen to how quiet I am; you can barely hear me..."Biggs: " My friend has a friend on Bestine who might help us make contact."Luke: "You're crazy: you could wander around forever trying to find them!"Biggs: " I know it's a long shot, but if I don't find them I'll do what I can on my own. It's what we always talked about Luke. I'm not going to wait around for the Empire to draft me into service. The Rebellion is spreading, and I want to be on the side I believe in."Luke: "Yeah, meanwhile I'm stuck here."Biggs: "You'll get your chance to get off this rock. You're going to the academy next term aren't you?"Luke: "Hmmm, not likely. I had to cancel my application."Biggs: "What for?"Luke: "My Uncle needs me."Biggs: (teasing) "Awwww."Luke: "No I'm serious, the sandpeople have been getting really crazy. They've even raided the outskirts of Anchorhead!"Biggs: "Come on Luke? Your Uncle could hold off an entire colony of sandpeople with one blaster."Luke: "I know. But We've got almost enough vaporators to make the place pay off. I have to stay one more season; I can't leave him now."Biggs: "What good's all your Uncle's work if the Empire takes it over? You know they've already started to nationalize congress in the central systems. It won't be long before your Uncle is just a tenant: slaving for the greater glory of the Empire."Luke: "No that's not going to happen here. You said yourself the Empire won't even mess with this old rock."Biggs: "Things can change."Luke: "I wish I was going. Are you going to be around long?"Biggs: "No. I'm leaving in the morning."Luke: "Then I guess I won't see you."Biggs: "Maybe someday... I'll keep a lookout."Luke: "Yeah... I'll be at the academy next season and then who knows? I won't be drafted into the Imperial Starfleet that's for sure. Well... take it easy buddy. You'll always be the best friend I've ever had."Biggs: "So long Luke."It appears that we are all half right about the academy- It is not really the Empire itself nor is it the Alliance, but seems to be a training ground for starpilots (kinda like going to flightschool for a pilot's license). The Empire recruits pilots from the academy to serve in the Imperial starfleet. Seda Navilli was right on the money about the rebellion recruiting people very secretively through word of mouth. Whew! Hope that solves that mystery!

There was a little bit more between Luke and Biggs in the radio show SW adaptation; Biggs told Luke he was going to leave the academy and join the rebellion.
I don't think it's ever made clear what academy it is. It could just be the regional flight school in that part of space -- I assume it's some kind of space flight training place, since that's what Luke was interested in.

My guess is that the kids were born on that asteroid base... The medical facility didn't look like the interior of the Tantive IV - but that's not set in concrete either. I don't remember what the book said about it...
