Unfortunately my favorite steampunk con went under this year. World Steam Expo used to be in detroit and had some great steampunk music groups too. I love Abney Park!

I've heard of both of those. And Steamcon. And Teslacon. We had a mini con in Daytona back in April, but I couldn't go. And it was a bit of a disaster. I doubt we will have another one.

World Steam Expo in Detroit is not going to happen next year? Drat. I've thought of going as I still have family and a friend or two in Michigan. It just hasn't worked out with my schedule.
I am very fortunate. Both SteamCon and Abney Park are local to me. AP has changed membership but are still in the Puget Sound area.

Yea, unfortunately no Steam Expo. I know the guy who ran it and a couple backers backed out. I do love Abney Park! I do need like their last 3 CDs though. They just came out with a new Christmas CD.

My nephew wants me to come visit in Feb. for a "Battle of Aiken" reenactment, if I do, I'll need to breakout the Civil War designs and get to work, so I can do him proud. I have to check the dates and see what the theatre schedule is, we open tomorrow, not sure when the close is, I might be able to go.

Civil War is a good era to do.

But the Civil War reenacters are, shall we say, "sticklers" for authenticity. That's putting it mildly, from what I hear!

So I've heard as well. I have a friend who recently came to us with costume help for a re-enactment. Not only does she not have the money to go full blown authentic, she has cerebral palsy. To expect her to wear all those layers and skirts in the Florida heat when she has a hard enough time getting around is insane to me. She'd trip and fall over her skirts for sure. I understand being authentic, but there are some situations that requite pretty darn close to instead.

Revolutionary war re-enactment is the same way. There's a lot of that around my area, being in New Jersey... They perform at Washington's headquarters and the old troop barracks at Jockey Hollow which are very close to me.

True, they are sticklers. The patterns I plan to use are museum historian created, and I usually use period fabrics for my medieval group, there's more info & extant examples to find for CW era. I'll probably do middle class day dress, must look into shoes.

I think I've finally figured out the incomprehensible directions for a pattern for an 'Irish Moy Gown'. It's very interesting and derived from a middle ages dress found in an Irish bog. Really, it's all gussets. It's something I'd like to wear at CostumeCon and Pensic (if that works out).

Yes, it does have a lot of gusset pieces! My favorite thing for Pennsic is Greek! Though the rules of the SCA say there is not beginning date, the spirit of the group is fall of Rome, so Greek is a little early. However, it certainly is comfortable in the heat and humidity of Pennsic. If not Greek, than a very simple, very early period linen or cotton T tunic! And a gauze veil that can be wet down to provide more cooling!

I picked up a skirt at salvation army store that is blue and white and would be great for an elf or Lady of the Lake. I just need to do a blouse and corset.

Ooooh, finds like that are always cool. Saves so much time. But looking for shoe that match always slow things down.I picked up a skirt at salvation army store that is blue and white and would be great for an elf or Lady of the Lake. I just need to do a blouse and corset. Kai, have you made the Irish Moy gown? Or seen one? There is at least one youtube video about it. It is an intriguing pattern and if the dress works out, I'll definitely consider myself 'advanced' at sewing. I've found that I like tablet weaving MUCH better than inkle weaving. Which is fine, since you can do both on an inkle loom. If I do anything medieval, I want trim.
What do you use for veils? Generally, anything heavier than silk for me ends up being too heavy and constantly has to be adjusted.
Still not a sure thing I'm going to Pensic since that depends on my friends going. Anything I make I'll wear at CostumeCon. Unless I get furloughed because of the Congressional cat-fight.

Yes, shoes do tend to pose a problem.
