The weird thing at first I thought he was bad, I was watching the DVD and they had Hayden's audition tape and he was actually quite good in his audition. I don't know what happened in the filming, he seemed stiff, but some stuff was quite good. The part that always threw me was Shmi's funeral, he seemed quite bad, especially when he reached down for the sand from her grave. But if I look back, (besides the sand part) it was a good representation of holding in rage. I think he took the holding in rage part too far though. He didn't need to portray that throughout the ENTIRE movie!

Well......Hayden Christiensen received a "Razzie"- the opposite of the Oscars for the worst actor of the year. But then, Esisode II received the worst movie of the year award......I choose to dismiss the latter, since I thought this one of the best ones. One thing that bothers me besides the acting abilities of Hayden-- if Darth Vader had a towering stature, why did they pick an actor (as Anakin Skywalker) who was not? In the end of ROTJ (Episode 6), the "reborn Anakin" also has a towering stature. Not enough steroids?

Well, he is still growing LOL. He's supposed to be working out now to "bulk up" more so he can wear the DV suit at the end of Ep. III. I say "supposed to be..."

Well, I have said this before, and I will say it again....
I don't think Hayden's acting was that bad.....
I thought some of the lines he had were bad...but those were written by George and I think Hayden was working with what he was given. If you ask me, Natalie Portman's acting was worse.....
Jake Lloyd was also blasted for his acting in PM...yeah, I know he was just a little kid....but I never thought his acting was that bad either.
The thing I try to remember about the Prequel vs Original Trilogy too is that in these prequel movies a great majority of the filming is done in front of a blue screen ....much more than in the original movies....and I think that cold and sterile shooting environment has to take its toll on the acting.... Sam Jackson was pretty stiff too....

At first I wasn't floored with Hayden's performance. As I've watched AOTC, I've started to notice subtleties. Watch Hayden's scenes more in depth, and try to understand his character better.
In fact only recently, I came to a big realization. WE'RE EVENTUALLY NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE ANAKIN! He becomes Vader. He becomes the ultimate villain. So, it seems that GL is intentionally and subtly not making Anakin a completely likeable character. Notably, think of the scene in Padme's apartment with the immature whining. Think of Anakin's arrogance. I think it's all in the service of foreshadowing his turn to the Dark Side.

Well stated Niron....
There were a lot of subtle things I missed ...and the more I watched it....the more I could appreciate those little facial changes....

Geez.....discussing this made watch the DVD again, and I like it better every time. As far as the dialogue is concerned (when Anakin and Padme are on Naboo), they are discussing how to solve problems and the bureaucracy in the Republic Senate. Anakin implies that few should decide the good for everyone and proceed, but Padme states that it would become a dictatorship. Anakin unwittingly stating what will happen?

in my opinion, hayden sucked as anakin, to whimpy for the part. to demanding, to whiney. and i read some where the man in black will be david prowse, not hayden, and i am very pleased james earl will return as the ever present voice of vader. as for hayden, personally, i thought he was whimpy!
