Okay we all know that obiwan sacrificed himself knowing it would be up to luke to stop vader, but what if he kept fighting and didn't sacrifice hisself? I still think vader would have won, but id like to hear what you all have to say ;D

No, Ben could not have survived. Aside from Vader wanting to get back at him for chopping off his legs, his other arm and the lava pit, there was a whole Death Star full of Stormtroopers all around who would not have allowed a Jedi to escape. I think that once Ben saw Vader he knew he wasn't getting out. But he knew that Vader or the Stormtroopers couldn't destroy him, so that was his ace. I think Ben was getting ready for that, having that last bit of finality with Vader before exiting. I like the bit where Vader is poking Ben's empty robe with his foot. Clueless about the light side as usual.
If it were just Ben fighting Vader by themselves, I'm not sure which one of them might have won. Sure Vader had the dark side, but he just didn't have the same connection to the Force that he used to. Obi-Wan may have been old, but look at what Yoda could do when he needed to?

I think Ben could have taken Vader alone. However, there was the whole issue of Balancing the Force and all. hat would require the involvement of Luke and Vader to fulfill...........

There are many ways to learn the ways of the Force, but only those who have joined it may know best.

Well, during the conversation between Tarkin & Vader, Vader did say that "Escape is not his plan."

I think Vader would have won, because He had been duelling practice droids regularly, whereas Ben had no real way to practice his saberfighting... . I believe that Vader had been training all those years for another confrontation with his old master, to finally beat him (sounds like Anakin, doesn't it?), whereas Ben had been relying entireley on Luke to save the galaxy. In his own words, he was "far too old" to defeat Vader, IMO.

I agree with you Seda, vader would have most likely won the duel. Then again if it was a battle of the force obiwan would have one most definitly.

I would have to agree that Vader would have won. The reason is because Vader is mostly droid so he wouldn't really get tired unlike that of Obi-Wan. However, if the Force was involved then it would be hard to decide since the only instances we seen Obi-Wan using the force in the OT was when he was using it in a subtle manner and not that of force.

Ben wasn't trying to beat Vader, just keep him occupied long enough. He seems to have spent his time on Tatooine learning hw to reach out to the Unifying Force and see the future and such. He had a bit of Yoda's distance about him. The scenes where VAder and he are dueling show Ben mostly defending and keeping an eye on the hangar bay. He planned to lose to Vader an become one with the Force in order to better guide Luke (and probably give Luke a solid rreason to want Vader defeated as well).

I don't really think it is possible for a jedi to get tired, since they say they use their strenght through the force, not off of adrenaline like we do.

Apparently (according to the rots novellisation) the force only goes so far, and once you get "force tired", the limitations of your body come into play. This happened to Count Dooku while he was fighting Anakin.

Yeah i noticed that too, but I never really saw obiwan or yoda get tired in episode 3 although yoda seemed to have a hard time walking after he foughted dooku in episode 2.

Yoda looked pretty worn out after that last battle with Palpatine. Jedi might not get tired in a conventional sense, but there may be a limit to how much strength they can use through the Force depending on the Jedi. And after lifting Luke's X-wing out of the swamp, Yoda still had to stop and take a breath to recover from the effort.

And then again yoda is old, especially in the original trilogy. So it is natural that he would be tired.

Well in one of the books I read Obi-wans formar Master Qui-Gon was teaching Ben how to become one with the force. Everlasting life. He didn't understand it at that age but in time he began too and thus reached the knowladge. So he knew it was time for him on the Death Star. Like everyone else wo'se said this.
Escape wasn't his plan. Vader was also far younger then then obi-wan and in my opinion more driven. Had ben not been there I assume Vader would have caught Luke and things could have gone alot diffrently from there.

Funny though how the guy that original played vader(not dave the other guy that showed his face)actually looked about the same age or a little older. But since he had brown hair in the end he was younger. I still find it odd that vader did not sense his son or daughter since they were there along with his former master.
