Schph, Does your machine have a strech stich? More tomorrow, closing time. dunno......lol....that is an ominous question...but I think I know where it is going....I did purchase some of the fabric for the Bariss cloak that is mentioned...but the local Joanne's didn't have enough...so I ordered more on line....I hope the color matches really good...I know that dye lots can differ.... ....and yes....the material is a little stretchy....lol...but I did manage to sew an under-tunic made from a bubble gauze that is kinda stretchy...and I did ok....so hopefully I can manage this fabric...and the fabric that it will take to do the "dress"... btw...the pattern I purchased for Barriss' cape is Simplicity 5794 and the pattern I bought for her "dress"...which I found is actually a shirt and skirt...is Simplicity #5795....it looks like it might work.....I HAVE to use a pattern....I am not that good of a seamstress...I should be able to modify 5795 into a shirt and skirt though.... still have to find fabric for the "dress"....I have heard that some have used bathing suit material..... what do you think Nova?

I think that would be to shiny, but I think that the cotton knit w/ some spandex in it would be good, it will fit the same way as the bathing suit spandex but has a more matte finish, like the fabric that they make leggings from, if you have a hard time finding it, let me know, I have a pretty good source. Closing time, more 2 morrow. The machine manual will tell if you have the stich, but a zig zag will work to.

the fabric I listed is for the cloak...I did purchase some of it already...but not enough...so I ordered the rest on-line...
I have been looking for fabric for a Barriss cape for a long time...and this is the closest stuff I could find...
now...on to looking for fabric for the rest of the costume...it looks like one piece in the photos...but actually is a shirt and skirt......
the shirt has a texture to it...and the skirt IS a stretchy fabric...the real test is to find both fabrics in an exact black color match...
this stuff is NEVER easy...lol...especially when you have to rely on on-line a lot.....which is where I will probably end up with trying to get the fabric for the shirt and skirt....the belt should be no problem...the leatherworker who did my Jedi boots and belt...and my Imperial Officer belt and blaster holster should be able to do the belt with his eyes closed...the buckle...now that may be a challenge...

Schph, I may be wrong, but I think that her shirt & skirt are Navy Blue, I think it mentions that in one of the books & that what it looks like on film. I'll see what I find.

I am really not sure about the color .... the three ladies that have already done the costume have all used black...
I think I will go back to Padawan's guide...and see what they say....

Cathy from the Dragon Con Matters Of The Force room & track sent a message that Wal Mart's has cotton crinkle gauze on sale for $1.00 a yard! Check your local Wal Mart's! ;D Yeah, I've seen this stuff, too, Nova. In fact, I sent an e-mail to whoever runs the Padawan's Guide about it. I posted the message as 'Ivan' on this page: www.padawansguide.com/outertunic.shtmlThe trouble is, the stuff is extremely lightweight and very sheer. I really wanted to use the stuff, but it just seemed entirely too flimsy, like it would rip apart if you moved too fast. In fact, another costumer, Olivia, posted a message that, while she liked the fabric, it tended to fray and pull at the seams. I can't remember, but I think Jedi Kai addressed this particular issue. The stuff was on the $2.00 table and could be special ordered. I do remember, however, that there was another fabric, one that was bleached white. This stuff was definitely more suitable to making an actual garment than the other stuff. The trouble is that it is a very bright white, and when I was having my costume made this summer, I didn't want to mess with dyeing any fabric. Actually, I ended up using a linen/rayon blend that was absolutely awesome; the only trouble was that it wrinkled like nobody's business! Anyway, that's my two cents on this particular matter.

You could always line the flimsy fabrics. That's what Leda did with her gauze tunic. I may want to line just collar on my new tunics. It sits kinda flimsy on my neck and the tabards sit better. Cause they are lined. ;D

Vek, the cotton crinkle gauze is usually used for the under tunic, it is a bit to flimsy for the outer tunic. Anakins under tunic that is quite plainly seen at the lake house is definitly crinkle gauze. It comes in bleahed white, natural (several shades, it's undyed unbleached) and sometimes is available in colours as well as black. Sometimes when I want to use the stuff, but need to abuse it a bit, I do what is called "flatlining" with a sturdier fabric like muslin or cotton broadcloth. More than likely, I'd just use a heavier weight of the cotton crinkle that is called homespun or various other things.

Nova... can Wool Crepe be dyed?

Wool is a natural fibre, it can be dyed, but wool crepe is not always the most stable type of wool, it can pull out of warp (shape) when wet and strech in a lot of odd ways or shrink in uneven ways. Give dharma trading a yell & see what they reccomend. i've never tried dying wool crepe myself, though, I've dyed wool a couple of times.
