yeah...it was a bummer.... I didn't think of that till I was just about done... and it looks silly..
lol... I always say that I help everyone out by making all the mistakes first...
;D
I have a 50% off coupon for Joanne's so tomorrow I am going to try to buy an entire bolt of osnaburg... and dye it dark brown... this time using both brown and black dye - the last time I tried to dye osnaburg dark brown..the dark brown was not as dark as I would have liked...it was actually more medium to light brown in my opinion... so I am hoping adding black to the dye bath will help darken it... should be interesting....lol.
I can make that mistake first too...
;D

I might try 2 browns with the black.... let it soak a long time before rinsing. I did that with something I dyed and then rinsed the daylights out of it so the color wouldn't come off the rest of my costume. But the double brown got it pretty saturated. Please keep us posted! And don't toss the tunic... hang it in view so you see it a lot when passing by, and you might get an idea of something to do with it to modify the design. What about wearing it with an undertunic with sleeves that are bunched up all up the arm, not just at the wrist? That's not your original concept, I know, but it might make a pretty neat design.

Yes...two brown with one black was my intent... and.. I have figured out a way to keep my washing machine agitating the solution for as long as I want without the machine going to the next cycle...
The last step will be the use of "Retayne"... which is a product to set dye in fabric because (and trust me on this one) no matter how many times one washes a dyed osnaburg tunic...the dye still keeps coming out...
I have used Retayne before... so... will definitely be using it on the osnaburg

I'm not familiar with that product... please tell me more. Retayne: www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/fixative.shtmlWell... I got lucky... I had a 50% off coupon for Joannes and as luck would have it ..they had a fresh uncut bolt of Osnaburg (though the clerk really struggled to find it in the storage area). I got home... used the retayne... then washed the fabric... then dyed 10 yards of the 25 yard bolt with 3 dark brown and one black package of Rit dye... to make a long story short... I am not crazy about the color... it is not dark enough... and to me it seems like it has a purple cast to it.... might have been the black... at any rate... I have some people coming over Saturday...I am going to ask them what they see the color as.

I'm going to check out that fixative... thanks! And actually I think it's the brown that has that purple cast... if memory serves, there are 2 browns in the Rit, and the darker definitely has the purple or rosy cast. You can really tell when you use that color only and start rinsing.... I've used that brown for several projects and now I usually put in a small teaspo onful (or less, according to the size of your batch) of an olive green or a tan... something with a bit of yellow to tone it down. You could maybe over-dye it in a LIGHT wash (VERY diluted) of olive green and not leave it in but about 10 minutes. (Been there, done that, left it in too long and had to over-dye again with the brown... ) My kitchen "science experiments" often leave a lot to be desired....

I think I prefer tintex to rit, and I usually use the liquid, it usually dyes more evenly. I think most pkgs. are meant to dye about a pd. of fabric, so I always use it based on that. Some browns are green based and some are more blue/purple, same with black, which also sometimes has a green variant, trying to match predyed fabric in red, white, black or brown can make you crazy. Yeah, Retayne is good stuff, I also soak in very cold water w/ lots of salt, then wash & dry on hot if possible.

it's sort of annoying that there arent better commercially available dye products out there...i dont want to cry conspiracy or anything, but geez...rit dye is designed for arts and crafts projects to make tie dye shirts, etc. not really fit for "professional" costumes....i guess i should try tintex but i dont have much faith

I think I will either try dyes from Dharma... or use liquid dye when the piece is all finished....which might even be by the end of today... I have the neckband now pinned on....then all I have to do is hem and finish the armholes... The short sleeved undertunic is already done. When I am sure I am happy with it then I will make an iron on transfer of this: I plan to re-dye before it ever gets worn.... I have not decided whether to first use rit color remover and then kinda "start over"...or just dye over what I have already colored it... here it is before I pinned on the neckband...what color does your computer render it?

done... look how different the color renders with no flash.. The only thing I plan to add to this costume is a Jedi insignia on the short sleeved undertunic...on the sleeve itself... ... I just haven't figured out how large.... whether to put it up at the bicep... or down near the hem of the sleeve... and which one... this one: or this one..

Wow! I really like the lines of this! And it HAS to be cooler for hot-weather cons like D*C and probably C5 this year.
IMHO the first insignia I believe is much more widely accepted as the "real" Jedi symbol. And I like it better, LOL

wow...looks great...and would be extrememly comfy on tatooine. you could also wear it without the undertunic and really show off those guns....or with a full length undertunic for a completely different look. very cool phyllis. try it on...take us to the gun show.

I do plan to wear gauntlets with it.. however... the gauntlets I made several years back are of pleather...and are REALLY hot too.... so... I might re-make them in fabric....

natural leather would be cooler than pleather... but fabric would be cool too...maybe with some very stiff interfacing?
coughgunshowcough
ps kai, i ordered some brown from dharma trading...we'll see. but i'm skeptical.
