All of the Jedi holocrons look cool, but I have to ask.... Aside from the coolness factor, why is everyone making one?
Will we see them in the next film?
I only remember seeing a Sith one in the cartioon. Where else do they show up in the SW universe?
And are holocrons just for communication, or do they record and play back as well?
They don't look like they fit conveniently into any pocket; is anyone making a holocron carrying case, too?
And are they "Jedi" holocrons because a Jedi buys one and uses it; or do they make them, like lightsabers?

It does seem like we're all making them at once, doesn't it. I've wanted to do one ever since I saw The Clone Emperor's on theforce.net However, I don't have his skills so was waiting to figure out how to make one more simply....which is why I titled my tutorial "An Easy Jedi Holocron".
No, we don't see them in the films. The only source I've seen (I don't read the graphic novels) is the Visual Dictionary......here's what I wrote in my tutorial....
Holocrons are not seen in the films but they are mentioned in the fiction and pictured in the Visual Dictionary for EP II. In the latter, it says that “the greatest Jedi secrets are safe encapsulated deep within the Holocrons, away from those who might misuse them. As Jedi advance in their ability to use the force, they find increasingly powerful insights and teachings...The ancient Jedi Holocrons stored in the Archives transcend the capabilities of data files and holobooks. They are imbued with perpetual, subtle power and can be used only by Jedi with extrasensory abilities. Holocrons are repositories of knowledge and Wisdom, holding the teaching and mentalities of great Jedi Knights and Masters. “
The Visual Dictionary shows two Jedi Holocrons and one Sith.
It's not something I'd probably carry around much. I'd have it at a fan table at cons as a display item.

Be cool to sit one on my dresser in my bedroom...
Make a good night-light too!

I too made my Holocron after seeing Clone Emporer's. I also find it amazing we all were working on them at the same time. Holocrons record and play back a Master's knowledge and are made like a lightsaber. I will not carry my Holocron much either and just display it at the table.

Aaaaah, now I get it. I guess the thing I saw in the cartoon was just a larger holoprojector.
Yeah, that's definitely a specialty item that a Jedi would make from scratch.
I saw a picture of the Clone Emperor as well, though I don't remember what the link is. If a costume looks that good in just a photo, it's got to be awesome.

Ooooooooh, now I get it! Now I see why everyone is making these things, as I look at the words at the bottom of the Clone Emperor page. **** You want this, don't you? **** Powerful he is in the Force.

Well, not quite so powerful since it's been almost 3 years since I first saw those images.
But he always puts an amusing comment on the bottom of each album.

That's nice. I like the transparency of it. Is that hot glue around the edges?

If you back out from that one photo, you'll see the entire tutorial top level: public.fotki.com/Kait/star_wars/ then click on the thumbnails for additional tutorial detail in the caption of the full sized photo. It's silver 3-D paint.

There are many ways to learn the ways of the Force, but only those who have joined it may know best.

Solinbeb, thanks for sharing that resource. Do you know anything specific about them? They look as though they are solid. Can they be opened?
My various designs are based on being able to get inside the cube.
