i was trying to think of a new prop to add to my jedi costume, and i was thinking about making a Jedi Holocron...(for those who dont know, a holocron is a crystal looking thing that stores lessons and tutorials that were taught by a jedi master)...i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make one or where i could find some pics of one from comic books or something...any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I will have to check thru my pictures from Filmcon 3 to see if I have a pic of the one that was there. If I do I'll find someone who can scan the picture for you.

I've just completed a holocron prop, myself. Thomas' (TheCloneEmperor) holocron is outstanding, and I lack the sculpting and casting skills that he has (he's extremely talented)...so I went a different route.
Mine is very simple, but makes a decent holocron prop, and should photograph quite well. I will do a pic of it this weekend when time permits, and will post the pic here for all to see.
I'll go ahead and describe the very easy way I went about making the prop:
I first constructed a cube of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard...I use this stuff all the time for various props and miniature making). This was made of about 5 layers, glued and clamped...then cut to shape of a cube.
I then cut out the detailed sides from cardstock (like you would find on the back of a writing or drawing tablet. Just simple geometric shapes (in this case a square within a square.
I also cut out some glyphs (actually Veknoid letters...Veknoid being a Star Wars Font seen in Episode I...) and glued those on the center of each side.
Painting was a breeze...used Krylon Guilded Brass spray paint over a base coat of Krylon Ultra Flat Black. Then hand painted the background color in a custom mixed paint, similar to periwinkle blue...a bluish lavender.
The prop was then finished with Krylon Matte Finish to seal and protect everything.
As holocrons are most assuredly widely varied in style and complexity, this one should work for a fairly simple design. This project took perhaps 2 hours total to complete. More complex ones would of course take longer.
As I said, I'll post a pic a little later this weekend, once I get the chance to do so...

Coolness I want to see that one. Myself I was just working on a holo device, you know the hand held deal , of my own design
but was think my next undertaking would be a holocron. I was thinking of used one of those cubes you put pictures in. My step daughter has this wild lighted ball from spencer gifts. I was going to put one of those behind the graphic. where did you find that font KaiRhann???

Okay, here is a picture of the completed Holocron. Not the best image, but my camera isn't the greatest. The font (Veknoid) can be found fairly easily by doing a search for "Veknoid Font"... you can find fonts like it and Nal Huttese and other Star Wars fonts, as well as other Sci Fi Fonts. ~Kai Rhann

WOW. Kai, "Wow" isn't a descriptive enough word to descibe that holocron. Incredible job. I'm scouting about for materials to create one of my own. Again, great job.

Thanks a lot, Mynn. Glad you liked it. Like I said, it's a fairly simple one (in my opinion). I will most likely make another, more complex one in the future...

Your welcome. Now that you'cut your teeth' on making one, maybe successive'crons will be easier in some aspects.
Since I haven't access to any power tools, or saws, I'll need to figure it out.:-D Which I don't mind, I have the greatest amount of fun that way.
Like with my Comlink. I have all the parts, the paints. Just laking ONE thing. What grit of sandpaper to use to ruff up the body.
With yourholocron's body being MDF you didn't need to sand it up much did you? Did you need to prime it before adding the paint or was it 'good to go' for painting after being cut,and glued?

The MDF was cut with a radial arm saw (essentially a circular saw on a slide-arm). It produces very, very clean cuts...but I did lightly sand the cube after cutting. Probably could have done without that, but never hurts.
As to priming the surface, I did start with a Ultra Flat Black spray paint. I always prime anything I paint.
As far as not having power tools, you could either use an existing cube (plastic, wood, cardboard, etc.) and then apply decoration made from cardstoc, paper, thin plastic, etc., and then paint after that. You could also use oven bake clay (Sculpey, Fimo...) to produce a holocron...

Nothing like the sound of power tools.:-D (Tim'The Toolman" Talyor grunt-Guy from Sitcom "Home Improvement")
I think my condo neighbor would be birthing herds of bovine if I had a room with my favortie assortment of power tools and using 'em. :-D :-D
My dad and I spent our summer days, building just about anything. Rabbit hutches, doors, hanging doors. Plus I had drafting class, and wood shop. MAJOR FUN.
On the other end of things , my brother and I would be spending afternoons working on cars and motor cycles.:-D Me having small hands was able to get to nuts, bolts and gaskets easier then my dad's or brother's larger hands. I've been around just about every power tool there is, except a dremel and the micro version. Time to go get one. Humm christmas present. Or should for that drill, I'd been eyeing.:-D
Incase you couldn't tell, I'm a tomboy. :-D
