Hey Jan-Qui, a while back we had a lightsaber class, and I think you might be able to do some of the moves that we learned. I'll make a copy for you and bring it to D*C. If your wrists are pretty strong, there is an opening/closing pattern that looks cool, and doesn't involve lifting the saber over your head at all, and you could do some of the rest of it, too. We'll skip the twirling above your head for now LOL. YEA TEAM! ;D THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. MESA very happy to hear that. My wrists are just fine--fortunately they get a lot of practice with other things. I know my therapist recommended that I bring my f/x to therapy to work with it----my therapist doesn't know anything about lightsabers but any kind of workout is possible & it would be more interesting then just the stick I'm using. My therapist is very much aware of Star Wars---I've worn several Star Wars Tshirts the last several months---I think all of them kind of got the picture that I sort of like Star Wars. I mentioned I'd wear my Jedi costume to one session---just not sure which session it will be yet. Doing therapy in Jedi uniform---very tempting & most likely will happen. They also know I've been using my Jedi costuming & desire to working with my f/x lightsaber as a motivation to do my therapy sessions there & at home. A couple of the therapists have family members that love Star Wars.

I'm kind of repeating myself here but: ;D I took my lightsaber hilt with practice blade in it to therapy today for the 1st time. My therapist was impressed. My therapist gave me 3 shoulder exercises to do with my lightsaber. He was surprised at how heavy it was. I have a Fusion lightsaber hilt from Parks sabers & from Random I have the practice blade---I had it made so it could work with my fusion hilt. So now I'm finally able to put it to some good use. I did find out just how weak my shoulders really were yet . Much therapy, training & strengthening they both need. My left is being a real "pain" literally because the muscles are still so weak but they are coming along. I'm right hand dominant & the muscles are a bit stronger-----but my range of motion has to increase a lot. My therapist decided that now I can use my practice lightsaber to strengthen my both shoulders. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- holding lightsaber in both hands exercise 1: lightsaber in extended in front right hand above left & move shoulders straight up & down 10 times then reverse hands & do it again for 10 times. This one is a toughy --left shoulder hurts. exercise 2: with the arm extended out to the side just go in & out 10-20 times on each side--this one is easy but I know how weak I actually am. This is a move Ray Park recommended to me last year at DC when I asked him what he would recommend. exercise 3: with left hand on top of hilt swing lightsaber to right shoulder & the reverse it putting right hand on top & swing to left shoulder. One side is easier then the other. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know now how very weak the muscles are---it was an eye opener & need much work so I can eventually do better. Next week just for fun I'm going to take an f/x to therapy along with the practice blade to see their reaction. 1 person there is having a party after DC & it seemed after seeing my practice lightsaber she wishes that lightsabers would be at the party---lightsabers won't be there--because of who they did ask after they took a vote of who they wanted. As I explained to her the general public thinks that all Star Wars characters are in 1 big group. I did attempt to explain to her that in order to have as many different Star Wars characters as possible at their party that other clubs needed to be requested. I have no idea what the future will bring. Oh well........................

I have a bit of an update /setback : My left shoulder is now officially done with therapy ---but I now have to continue at home ---the problem with this shoulder is the rotator cuff is soooooooooooooo tight I have to practice stretching it in different ways. Sometimes feels good & sometimes hurts like the.......... My right shoulder is still undergoing therapy & it's doing fine ---I just hope it will soon be able to reach my left shoulder more easily ---I have a different prothesis in the right comared to the left. ;DThe good news is that my therapist has given me several exercises to do with my lightsaber---just need the room or I just use my hilt to practice. I put twirling on the back burner for the moment---no space to twirl for now. Bathroom still being remodled. We had flu :-[here in town so it kind of backed things up a bit. The bathroom is about 85% done.

Getting back into an exercise routine has been very hard--but the shoulders seem to be improving--a bit slower but going forward. I've learned a few parry & attack moves with my practice lightsaber---I'm awkward but I can lift my saber sort of over my head-----which is a HUGE IMPROVEMENT. I couldn't raise my arms to my shoulders, let alone higher. I have pain when I do it but at least it's only the stupid rotator muscle that has to learn how to stretch again. Now if I can only find space in which to practice the moves better .

Update on me, I think. On Friday I get to have my left knee worked on---laprascopicly. After I had my left shoulder fixed in february I accidentally had a fall & the shoulder was fine but I tore a muscle in my left knee. The knee comes & goes as far as pain goes. I can't move fast nor can I pivot, so I've had to be very careful when I walk or turn. On Friday 12-12-08 I get to have that fixed---I have no idea what the Dr is going to do other then trim something or other but once healed I should be able to move without stressing the muscles in the knee. This really slows me down handling a light saber. If you think of it a prayer would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, absolutely will pray!
And we don't want you to turn into a cyborg! (They don't fare too well in the SW universe....)
Seriously, hope this goes well and that the rehab won't be difficult or prolonged.

Thanks. I don't want to be a cyborg either---though down the road who knows. My aunt has 3 implants already---2 knees & 1 hip. She's 1 up on me . From what the doctor told me---it's labroscopic so it's very simple but the nurse said they wrap up the whole leg---that should be interesting-- w crutches at least for a short time. If I really could put this off I would but it would be just my luck to twist wrong & really do the knee in. I might not need any rehab at all---hard to say right now.

Wow, that was quick knee surgery. I hope it heals fast. Knees are kind of important for getting around. It's better to take care of things like that before they become bad. Will you set off metal detectors at airports?

Hi Ani, I had knee surgery but not knee replacement surgery. I had fallen in March & tore a muscle or cartaledge in the knee & the blasted thing wouldn't heal. So the doctor cleaned or trimmed it--not sure which. At the time I was more concerned about my shoulder being damaged then my knee. So no I won't be setting off any airport stuff because of the knee. I do enough with that with my shoulders which both have metal in them. You'd almost think we're having a competition in my house to see whose got the most bionics --- I mean what are the odds of 3 women in the same household, all related to each other, with different last names having joint replacements in the time frame from 2003 to 2008. Mom is 1 hip replacement but 2 hip surgeries-the replacement had to be fixed Aunt(Mom's sister) is 2 knees & 1 hip---she's doing great--she's 1 replacement up from me Me 2 shoulder replacements--I'm kind of the rare one because 1 does not normally have 2 shoulder replacements within 4 months of each other--even my therapist said that---& that therapy is the toughest---lucky me. I know Jedi don't take these easiest path but this was a bit rediculous. I'm doing fine . Though the this last trip at neither airport did my shoulders make it ring. When they saw my knee brace--no metal in it--they got concerned & pulled me out to check it out. I had that on to stabalize my knee while out of town.

Sometimes I think I'm meant to have one thing break down then another. Well I guess that happens when you get my age. 1st it was my 2 shoulders--got those fixed. Then my knee which got fixed. Now my lower back is acting up or rather continuing to act up---never ending story of aches & pains ---it's frustrating to say the least but I refuse to let these get me out of my Jedi costume. One way or the other I will be & dress as a Jedi & do events & I'm hoping I can do this till the Lord calls me to join the force. For those who read this please pray that I just have arthrits in my lower back & not a blown disk. Arthritis I can deal with. A blown disk might mean surgery---again---yuck! Thank you MTFBWY

Well, I wish strength to your lower back. That would be better than either arthritis or a disk. Em had back surgery and it did work out. So, you wouldn't be the first Jedi in the crowd to have that happen if it's the disk.

Weeeelllll I get to do therapy again for my lower back this time. . From what I've been told I do have arthritis in the lumbar area with a pretty good curviture in the lower spine. From what I gather the curve is pinching some nerves---so my knee acts up. I think with therapy they want to see if they can get that area to relax enough. Actually I'm grateful it's only arthritis, so far. I am able to walk & plan to keep doing so. I'll admit that standing anywhere for any amount of time is really bad. I'm grateful I can walk & do many things. Quicher suspects that as I get older the arthritis could criple me but I hope not for a very long time yet. After therapy I go to see the doctor & hopefully that will be all that's needed or maybe some shots---who knows ::)time will tell. I'm not going to let this stop me from costuming---I need to be able to dress as a Jedi for as ;Dl ong as I am able to do so. I love wearing it too much to give it up. I figure I'm still a youngster in the convention/event time line ;D. So I'm going to have to adapt as I've been doing all along.
