I suppose I've given this one too much thought, but the only way I cas see how Obi-Wan/Ben Kenobi can support his hermit lifestyle on Tatooine is gambling.
- He has the Force - He's in hiding - He doesn't need much, so can be disceet about it and he can afford to strategically lose sometimes for show - He would only need to go into the spaceports a few times a year to make enough to live on for the rest of the season - A major part of Tatooine's economy (if not all) runs on gambling, so no one will notice
In ANH Obi-Wan knows where to hire a fast ship at Mos Eisley, so he has to have been making trips into town every now and then.

Who knows. Maybe he even scavenged the desert to find objects to sell in the marketplace. And if he did gamble, well, you know what happened between Qui-Gon and Watto in EP1 which means he could have picked up his old masters way of tricking the greedy. But he lived by himself and he didnt do much but watch over Luke so he wouldn't have to make much money to live.

Course we also never know what else he did besides watching Luke. Can't watch the kid 24/5(Standard week.) As a Jedi, he'd probably go about helping folks. Only Luke called him a crazy hermit and he probably heard it from Lars who knew what Ben was. <shrugs> Ben might be repairing lcoal moisture farmer's equipment or whatever is needed.

maybe the old republic funded him or gave him like a million credits before he went into hiding

Humm. It could be a possibility, but I don't see it happeneing. Mainly once Palpatine found the banking records, he could track down the transactions and find Kenobi

Perhaps those food capsules last longer than we believe. I'm kidding.

Lazlo what are we gonna do with you ;D.
I'd say gambling is the most likely possibility.

I figure that if Luke's got all that force with him, then in the force the kid would shine like a beacon. So if something were to happen to Luke, he'd probably feel a ripple in the force, so it wouldnt really be that tough.
Maybe he was a 'trade master', he could go to the Jawas, wave his hand "You will give me everything you own in trade for a old peanut butter sandwitch" and BAM, he's richer.

I suppose old Ben could get what he wanted out of the Jawas. I just don't think he'd want anything they'd have. But the Force would be mighty handy keeping the Sandpeople away.

I really can't see Ben as a gambling man. He was also trying to keep a low profile - winning money off of bounty hunters and smugglers on a regular basis does not help No, I believe he lived much the same way as Yoda did - growing and cooking his own food. He had a pretty decent little hut, and probably had food stores (maybe he nicked some off the Tantive IV)

Never thought of it... but...He could have been supported by Bail Organa....and other loyal members of the Old Republic that would be my guess.... He was in hiding...but Bail sent Leia to get him.....so Bail and others knew where he was at....

I seriously doubt that Bail Organa lent any financial support or had any regular contact with Kenobi. Certainly not anything that could be traced. Leia's message in ANH was phrased to make it sound to me like they hadn't had any contact in years. I still think that Organa really called on Ben to come and train Leia in the Force, and bring Luke as well if he could.
I think that Ben's needs were so modest that he could do fine by winning little bits here and there without calling attention to himself. But I suppose, if a Jedi is in a game of chance, can you really call it gambling? Sort of like a toss of the dice with Qui-Gon.

Probably not regular contact....but I bet that Bail sent enough funds to Obi-Wan to last years at a time...and where Bail might not have know exactly where on Tatooine Obi-Wan was...
well....the Tantiv V was captured in space right above Tatooine (the escape pod that held R2 and C-3PO is not intended for long distance travel)
....Leia was on her way there to find him....

I suppose Leia gave R2D2 the coordinates for where Obi-Wan was, so Bail Organa had to have had a more specific address for Kenobi than "Tatooine".
Now, whatever Bail Organa might have sent couldn't have been in ordinary currency, possibly tradable goods and supplies. We know how far Republic/Empire credits go in Mos Espa. And Jedi mind tricks don't work on gangsters from Tatooine. Now, one reason I'd think that Obi-Wan would have been on his own on Tatooine is the problem of who would deliver any aid. I'd suppose it could have been the Tantative IV, or possibly members of the crew in a smaller ship who already knew that they'd stopped to drop Obi-Wan off on Tatooine anyway.
