I suppose Ben could have made sand candles...
Or maybe.... he used his lightsaber to heat the sand and did some glass blowing. Maybe he traded fancy Jedi glassware with locals in Mos Eisley for supplies.

Hmmm...or perhaps he opened a very exclusive shop of expensive hand made glass items

I think may have been a Magician doing tricks to the local folks... and in his spare time played mind games with the Sand People.

I should change my avatar to say "resurrector of dead posts."
I agree that gambling (and cheating at it) is a little darkside for Ben (though he does say, "In my experience there's no such thing as luck"). I think it's more reasonable to assume that he was able to live off of trading with other farmers. He had a lot of furs in his house, so I think it's also reasonable to assume that he used the Force (certainly not an uncivilized blaster) to stun, capture, and kill animals to eat, and then kept the furs as functional decoration.
From what I read about him on Wookieepedia, I understand Ben would sometimes go into Anchorhead and have a brandy. As far as how he got there, I don't think it's too far a stretch to assume that Ben somehow acquired a speeder bike or swoop or something. I know he hated flying, but this would be different.
Ben is the kind of guy I'd want to hang out with. Simple, wise, unpretentious, but not to high on himself to refuse a good drink.

Remember, he does have two packs of stuff with him at the end of ROTS... and in the novel of ANH, Luke mentions that "Old Ben" came around every once in a while to trade things...
It makes sense that he hunted for food, so trading the skins and furs makes sense...
Maybe he did Sand Paintings... !

He probably did some trading with the jawas but I'd bet (pun intended) that he'd do whatever it took to survive (as well keep his sanity).

I really can't see Ben as a gambling man. He was also trying to keep a low profile - winning money off of bounty hunters and smugglers on a regular basis does not help No, I believe he lived much the same way as Yoda did - growing and cooking his own food. He had a pretty decent little hut, and probably had food stores (maybe he nicked some off the Tantive IV) Yeah, I agree with you. I don't think Jedi would make a living off gambling.

I like Ani-Chay's theory that Ben probably gambled...but it does attract some attention when thieves and low lifes start losing to an unassuming old man. Maybe he sold Ramen noodles? ;-D Okay, in all seriousness, I don't see how he could have grown anything out where he was at...then again, I don't suppose I could have seen how anything grows on Tatooine at all! That is one desolate, hot, sandy planet.... I'm inclined to go with Ani-Chay's theory of gambling.
May the Force be with you.

Wow! Hey, Cozmo, the title of "Resurrector of Dead Posts" has passed onto me! Or, at the very least, Kaleesh....
