I know why they have a problem with it. My mom doesn't like me reading "trash", so I finally asked her how she defined it. This was her reply (as well as I can remember it), "You don't have to read great literature all the time, because I know you like light reading sometimes. But if you want something like that, read a Newberry Award Winner. It's easy to read. I just want you to have a common base of knowledge when you go off to college. Educated people read good books. They read books that have won awards, that will teach them something. I don't know, maybe that stuff will win awards someday. But I want you to read good things, so that you can talk about it with other educated people."
I don't agree with her, but I can understand where she gets that idea. Most of the stuff on the schools' reading lists have won some type of award... Personally, I've read so many books with awards tagged on them I don't care anymore.

Well, I'm not going to argue with you mother! Here's my take on it. SW is not trash, and you should ALL sorts of good books. Classics included. ;D

I'm slightly dyslexic, so I didn't learn to read as early as some but once I did learn to compensate, there was no stopping me, and as you may have guessed, I'll read almost anything. The house rule was, I was allowed to read anything that I could read. I was as likely to read my uncle's college textbooks as a novel, or the encyclopedia (actually a favourite of mine), classics, or junk, I still read on all levels, children's thru adults. By all means you should read those books that won awards, but there is no harm in reading some fun stuff as well, I can really say that I've learned something interesting or sometimes even important in almost every book I've ever read, even the real trash. And while I don't have a college degree, I do have a better education than many college graduates that I know, and my grammar and spelling haven't suffered from it either.

I agree with you, guys (girls?). I read Robin Hood so many times my mom had to threaten me before I stopped. Then it was Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, then Beowulf. And now she's upset about SW, even though I read alot of other stuff. I just don't get it, sometimes.

Parents can be tough I know this I am occasionally. The reading thing ugh. My stepdaughter is int alot of well books about poor me my life is a tragity and I see her playing it out in her own life. It is very anoying. I limit it so she dosen't overload she gets really depressed and withdrawn and the world is all of a sudden a bad place so we have cut her way down on that sort of stuff. SW is creative. Read the hero with a thousand faces By Joshph campbell smart scolared people read it Mr. Lucas read it it is pretty deep but maybe yourre mum will approv. It is not light reading.

Why would she be upset about you reading medevil mythology? That's EDUCATIONAL!! She was fine with it at first, but after I read Robin Hood for the 7th time she kinda flipped out. So then I started rereading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight alot, and that's when she handed me Beowulf. After I read that for the 4th time she got fed up and said I should "broaden my horizons" and read something that wasn't medieval. ::sigh:: She likes that it's educational, but she wants me to be "well-rounded". But it's not like I don't read other things, I just read the medieval stuff right before I went to sleep.
The Hero With a Thousand Faces? You guys talk about that one alot, so I'll look for it. Thanks, Jade.

I just HAVE to recommend I,JEDI. I've started reading it again. This will be my second time reading it. It is such a good story in that it tells the trails and tribulations that Corran Horn goes thru to claim his Jedi heritage. There is some great Jedi Lore stuff in the book. It's a good read!

Book #1 is called "The Rising Force"....it covers Obi-Wan when he is 13 years old and looking to become a Padawan....Qui-Gon does not want him at first because Qui-Gon's first apprentice, Xanatos, went over to the dark side...
very good series! Really goes in depth on Obi-Wan's and Qui-Gon's relationship and later in the series to Qui-Gon's love for Tahl....another Jedi that he pledges his life to......very sad!

oooooooohhh sounds good I have the second one but should I wait and read the first one first?
Also Ryss I would recomend the young Jedi knights series. I just read one called Heris to the force. It was really good and in my opinion well written. Jacen and Jaina Solo find a crashed Tie on Yavin 4 with their friends. They are tranning at the Jedi Acadamy.

Funny you should ask......I was just going to go to this thread and say that "Star by Star" so far can be summed up in one word....confusing!
I am half-way through it and I am finding it a tough read so far. It is good....but I find that I am still struggling to put all the pieces together. And there are soooooo many new characters that I am getting a little lost.
So...it is interesting...but confusing at times.
