I use Raw Silk for the over tunic. Some use something called Ousenburg(Mispelled I bet.)
You cna use bascially anything as long as it has a nice drape.
Raw Silk (Like Obi Wan and Qui Gon)
Linen (Like Mace Windu)
Ousenburg (Cotton stuff)
Others around here can give awesome tips to which fabrics can work. Some who get hot easily, use differant stuff from others who are more on the cold side.

Greetings, I think the cotton being refererred to is spelled OSNABERG. I have tunics in different fabrics, my favourite one is natural undyed, unbleached raw silk linen, I also have one in linen, and another in cotton duck (sort of like denim in weight) cost varies, Linen from $5.00 to $9.00 a yard, Silk linen from $5.00 to $15.00 a yard, the cotton about the same. Where are you located? What are your local fabric stores? We do have threads on fabric resourses for those who don't have good avialability in their local area. Another good fabric to used is called Indian Homespun, which is a heavier version of cotton gauze.

Osnaburg is pretty cheap. Can't remember exact price. All the Osnaburg I've seen looks very similar to Mace's outer tunic. It's probably what I'll be using if my forest green idea doesn't pan out.

I live in Roseville CA. Walmart is the cheapest fabric store near here.

The Wal-Mart near me has it in a nice Jedi ready light tan color. I think it would work great for an outer tunic.

It's just called Osnaburg. Ask the sales people in the fabric dept. They should be able to take you right to it.

It sounds as if you have it under control, that should be a good fabric for an outer tunic. How much is the osnaberg in your local Walmart, Caan-Jaal?

It's $2.07/YD at the Wal-Mart here in Massillon. In fact it's such a good price, I'm leaning towards using it and changing my original idea for my costume.

Osnaburg is what I made my first outer tunic from too....I really like it....and had a guy come up to me at Costume Con and ask about the fabric....he said that it looked like a "real working Jedi" fabric....which is great....
it is comfy, cheap, and relatively cool.....
it does tend to frey like crazy though....
I think it is an excellent choice for a first tunic...as you get your feet wet...you can always "graduate" to the more expensive fabrics.....
good luck....and welcome!

I've decided to make a new outer tunic...this time I'll follow an actual pattern. But here's the link to the fabric I just bought. store.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/l-492.htmlMy last one was made of gauze and I found it pretty easy to work with, and I'd never sewn before. This time I'm going to line it with some kind of satiny smooth fabric (I'm clueless when it comes to fabric names) , but I haven't found a good one yet... something slippery.

oooooooohhhhhh.....nice fabric Leda..
I have ordered from phoenix textiles too....they ship really fast and I have been really happy with their stuff...what pattern are you going to use?
also..thanks for the heads up on the gauze...I had heard that gauze is really hard to work with....I have 6 yards of a "bubble gauze" that I want to use to finally make an inner tunic...it is REALLY light....I have been hesitant to start because I heard gauze was a nightmare....
