While attempting once again to locate Calcutta fabric(& failing to do so---I called 3 of our Joanne Fabric store around me & they never got calcutta in this year ) Calcutta is a fabric that looks a lot like the fabric in Obi-Wan's tunic in AOTC & ROTS. I myself have been looking for the rich looking chocolate one that Walmart used to carry a few years ago. Joannes is not sure but they think the manufacturer stopped making Calcutta. If anybody out there can locate it please let me know. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok that being the case I looked up cotton fabrics with warehouses, etc. I haven't checked them all but did locate someplace that has Osnaburg fabric in colors. On line it's the fabric cave. This is the home page: locate Osnaburg & click to take you to it. www.fabricave.com/main.aspx?code=9279b97d3f52497584b8www.fabricave.com/pics/fabrics/OSNABURG/C-OS.jpgI'm not sure but the brown seems like an Anakin brown to me or maybe even too brown---closer to black. There is one that is called camel & that one looks like a possibility. I've never seen the camel before only the natural & sometimes the green. I know myself I prefer calcutta because it wrinkles less but osnaburg at least does work for Jedi tunics even it does wrinkle more. If this was found before, I appologise, I didn't have time to look at all the threads before posting this.

I got the 6x6 inch size samples of these osnaburg colors & I can say WOW! the fabric is interesting. They do have a very nice brown or sand colored one & the white could be dyed a chocolate brown.

I love osnaburg, so I sent for some samples myself. Funny they don't show the price.

True. I think I might eventually order some of the lighter brown & possibly some white to have it dyed chocolate.
Nova do you know of any professional dyers in New York? I'm not exactly sure what to look for or ask for on that score. I might also check in Chicago but I need to know what to look & ask for.
I'm also thinking it's going to take outer tunic, obi & tabbords--6-7 yds? robe--9 yds?(5'2")--I'm thinking of ordering some chocolate Ponte fabric for a new lighter wgt robe that won't wrinkle when I travel. Am I around the right numbers on these? (Joanne Fabric on line has the correct color & quantity).
It's been quite awhile since I've bought quantity of fabric. Thanks

The web site I know of for information about dyeing is:
www.dharmatrading.com/
They're very helpful with lots of information about dyeing anything.
About fabric, I use 8 yds for a robe (I'm 5'3") -- but only if it's 60 inches wide. You would need more if the fabric is narrower. With 9 yds you would certainly have extra to make a matching bag with -- I did that for one robe. Very handy for carrying things at a convention.
For a tunic, tabbards and obi I'd go with 6 yds. 2 yds for the tabbards and part of the tunic and 4 yds for the rest of the tunic and the obi. In the pictures of the movie costumes, the obi is cut on the bias and that takes some extra.

I usually get about 7 yds for tunis etc, and 9 for robe, give or take.

Thank you. We're going to attempt to some sample dying of some fabrics I have here at home--osnaburg being one of the to see how they turn out next week. I made one home osnaburg tunic & we may attempt to dye that one chocolate to see if it will work out. I figure if it looks ok I could maybe wear it to a convention but not at all sure about it, since I did make it for home only.

Make sure to prewash! The chocolate osnaburg from fabric cave, or anywhere else, will probably bleed colour and lighten w/ time & washing, cotton is usually not very colourfast unless treated or not 100% cotton. Try washing the swatch to see what it does. The osnabueg that Schph dyed, lightened alot.

And when you pre-wash osnaburg expect some noticeable shrinkage, too. Maybe 5-10%.

Thanks. I ususally do a pre wash with every fabric I buy---it's a pain but great in the long run.
This should prove interesting. We're simply attempting re make my chocolate tunic because I can't locate the blasted chocolate calcutta any more. Quicher loves that costume when I wear it. So I need an alternate to help out.

Boy....that Osnaburg in brown is really interesting.. I did dye regular "natural" osnaburg Rit brown...but it did not come out very dark.. if I did it again...I thought I would mix 2 packs of the Rit brown with one pack of Rit black... and... above all else... after dyed .. treat the dyed fabric to "Retayne"...which is a dye "fixer"... I love the crinkle gauze... but..if it is thin you have line it or double it... it can be a pain to work with...but I still love it... like this: www.fashionfabricsclub.com/catalog_itemdetail.aspx?ItmID=EEE544

I was lucky enough to find a crinkle cotton that was heavy enough to make a tunic from without the need to ine it, but that is unuual. Usually crinkle cotton is thin and work better as an undertunic. Osnaburg cotton is more reliably heave for a tunic.

I found a heavier cotton crinkle a while back too...bad thing was there was not enough on the bolt of fabric... I was bummed... never saw it again.... but I always start to look around January when Joanne's starts to put out spring fabric...

Jan-Qui, Is the Osnaburg a fabric you're suggesting for the outer tunic or the inner tunic? I looked at it from the link you provided, but it looks too soft for the outer tunic. Don't get me wrong, it looks like it would feel incredibly comfortable, certainly, but it looks like it wouldn't be "stiff" enough for the outer tunic...I don't know; I'm none too versed on fabrics, so maybe you would know more about it...thanks for the link, though! It's incredibly helpful! Now I can know what to do in and look for what I do my next tunic....
Thanx!
