There are many ways to learn the ways of the Force, but only those who have joined it may know best.

Tried to emulate the one in the Visual Dictionary. Used a baseball cube. The inner cube is a plywood cube spray-painted gloss black. Most of the designer type stuff is from thin plywood/plastic container that i etched out with a razor. There are O-rings. Balsa wood for the frames. Used a glue called modge podge glue lustre that dries clear. Looks pretty good to me.

Wow! That looks really good. I'd be interested in photos of the making of, if you have them. What is the frame around the outermost cube?

thanks for the compliment. The edges for both cubes are balsa wood and modge podge glue for filler, painted gold. Here are 2 'in the making' photos that I took.

Nice. Constructed just like the 3d model used on our main site... but with real materials.

I wonder how putting actual electronics in one would look. My grandfather has a hobby of fixing up / fiddling with old computers, he has old mother boards and processors just lying around all over the place. I'll have to pick up some baseball and golf ball cases and play around with some of the smaller boards.
Oh, as for one that talked, if you want a button to push to make it say something you can buy a little thing at Build a Bear for around $8 I think. Might be able to hide it on the bottom some where.

Thanks for compliment, Stey Fann, Leda, & Kai-Thri Ona. That's real cool placing electronics in a holocron. Perhaps i'll make the attempt next time around.

its an inexpansive way to add some electronics and you really dont need to know anythig about electronics accept how to put batteries in LOL

Sa-weeet! Man, that looks absolutely super!
I'm impressed! Would love to make one myself... I carved that one from the Visual Dictionary into a rubberstamp and really liked how it turned out.
Thanks for sharing!

Similar to Stey Fann's idea for adding light... While wandering around Fry's Electronics last week, I discovered a 3 inch "Starburst LED Light" with a battery case that's attached to the star by a 10 foot very thin clear wire. It sells for about $10 and is in the department with the novelty lights, floating globes, lava lamps, etc. [ftp]http://shop4.outpost.com/product/3861727;jsessionid=je89cfIH9833vEPqmaOF8A**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG[/ftp] I bought one and it exactly fits inside the 3 inch baseball cube. I say exactly b/c you have to be very careful when closing the cube, but once closed, the star stays put and doesn't slide around. It's in there pretty tight! (A photo cube is 3 1/2 inches and a bit too big.) The light comes from the center (as you can see in the photo) and fades as it goes out toward the "tips". The star changes color, first in phases and then in pulses. The wire goes discreetly out the back of the cube, so the star can be switched on/off or the batteries (3 AAA) changed so that the finished Holocron prop would not have to be disassembled. In addition, the wire can slip down the sleeve of your costume, so the Holocron could be carried. I always thought of my character as sort of a library nerd (a/k/a "Jedi Historian" ) so I had thought I'd like to be holding a Holocron in my banner. This is my busy season at work (accounting ) but as soon as I can I'll take a pic of the light inside the cube. And of course, then I'll have to start "decorating" the Holocron... BTW, it appears that a similar product is available "wholesale" at the Mr. Light site, but there may be some variation in size or some other spec, so I can't say for sure that it's exactly the same thing.
