The jedi pouches are basicly curbolli (boiled in oil or wax) to make th pattern after they are assembled. If you aren't going for movie accuricy you can get some cow hide(~$40 for a half side) some waxed string, an awl and a Leatherworking needle (a blunt needle with a big eye) and make your own. I'll be wearing the set I'm working on at MegaCon.

I found a couple I like at Ren Faire and use them, they have a little celtic knotwork on them, but they work fine. They were a gift from a being that I met on a mission once (at least in my Jedi plotline)

Jedi Toba Qaf's Recipe for Jedi Pouches: Ingredients: 4" peice of 2x4 Leather Staple Gun Something to cut the leather Instructions: 1. Make sure peice of 2x4 has square corners and is the size you want your pouch to be. 2. Lay out the leather, good side down. 3. Place 2x4 on leather. 4. Fold the leather over the 2x4 one side at a time, stapling down on the back(which is facing up). As you work, cut off excess. When you fold the last flap(which should be coming up from the bottom side of the pouch), DO NOT cut off excess until you have made sure that you are not cutting off the front flap(which is actuall a continuation of the bottom side, the back, and the top side). Then you should use a glue or adhesive to stick down the front flap(unless you think staples look good, in which case you should use staples). 5. The next step is to staple a rectangular peice of leather onto the back of the pouch by the ends. It should be done in such a way as the belt can be slipped under, but not so loosely that the pouch slides around too much. 6. You now have a pouch which looks pretty good and costs very little. The downside is that you can't put anything in it....

Come to think of it, I guess you could use a small wooden box instead of a peice of 2x4 . They you could put things it it, but it would be harder to make .

LonMark, I look forward to seeing the pouches you've made. I'll be attending Mega Con as well. As to making pouches, I'm going to be learning how to make some functional leather ones.:-) A friend of mine is appreciting me in the prop constuction thing. :-)

Well.........if someone wanted to 'shortcut' from having to build your own, military surplus would be the ticket. I have seen many types of leather cartridge cases like WWII German pouches which made very nice examples. These can be easily found from Army/Navy surplus outlets, and the military collectibles section on Ebay. The general public (aside from other experienced Jedi) could NOT tell the difference.
Don't think so? Look at The Parts of Star Wars, other visual references- including the films, especially Episodes 4-6. Before Lucasfilm had a "budget", military surplus was cheap and plentiful, though the majority of pouches are on other characters. They STILL use these, if you look hard enough. After being a costumer for some time, you learn to de-construct how the 'professionals' do it.
This would be an acceptable in my eyes to look authentic enough for a Jedi Belt, especially for those who are beginners, and who lack the time or funds.

I agree, firespray. My opinion of our costumes is that they are always a work in progress. It was well over a year before I attempted to make my own movie-replica belt. You do what you can with what you've got, including time, skill and money. When we improve any of these, we can upgrade our garb.

Amen...JediKai...
I have heard some horror stories though about members of some of the other costuming groups making fun of and excluding people whose costume, they feel, is not up to certain standards...I find that sad indeed... not everyone has a couple thousand dollars laying around....or even a couple hundred...
I love seeing all the costumes and applaud every effort to have fun in the Star Wars Universe..
it is, after all, supposed to be fun...right?

I agree, it is fun to make and wear the costumes. I always love wearing my Jedi uniform(s), sometimes I'll just randomly wear part- or all- of it because I feel in a Jedi-ish mood. Ya know, get (one of, LOL) the lightsaber(s) out and swing it around in a very elegant and planned out fashion, like it's your life and it's the only thing you know how to use. No......I'm not experienced in doing that.... ;D Heh.
But I do still need to finish my belt.. I finished off a few more erasable-pen caps and need to attach them to my belt, maybe refinish my lovely "comlink" and *finally* finish my lightsaber.... Now...to find/make pouches.. *sigh*
