It's called lightsaber rotoscoping. The others would know more. Moving this to the Lightsaber forum. You'll get more help there.

I cheated and had a friend do the rotoscoping for me...I just e-mailed my photo ....and he sent it back with the "glow"....
He never finished the last one I sent him...so it is safe to say he has moved on to other things.

If you have photoshop you can also download a set of actions called LIA (lightsabre ignition actions) and follow the instructions as everything is almost automated. Its very easy to do.
LIA will also do blaster bolts and that funky holonet effect.

actually, it was not a picture of me...it was the photo of Dengar11 that appears on the costume page....since I never got the photo back with the glow, I just sent theh photo to Tanthos "as is"....I would have loved to have that photo cropped too so you could see Dengar better..... I can see if I still have Dengar's scan of his photo on a disk somewhere....

I use Photoshop for my saber effects. I do not have the L.I.A. package, but don't see the need.
It's very simple to do a lightsaber blade in photoshop. I use the paintbrush tool, with a brush having a "diffused" edge. First I do the colored "halo" of the blade, using an opacity setting of about 40% or so. Creating a "line" with the paintbrush tool is done by holding down the shift key, and clicking 2 points (one at the base of the saber and one at the tip of the blade). once you have established the colored area, switch color to white, and opacity to 100% (or near...depends on taste). Select a smaller paintbrush size (can be "solid" or "diffused"...I use diffused). Then repeat the same line method used for the colored "halo"...not extending the line all the way to the tip.
Sounds lengthy, but is simply two lines, one of color and one in white. Two different opacities, and brush sizes. Takes me about 30 seconds to do...
Photoshop is a wonderful program to work with images in...I love playing with images in Photoshop...really cool stuff...

One method I love Kai is this: Because teh sabers in the movies screen (you can see it in teh Yoda fight, in TPM when the sabers are ignited and a few other areas) the way I do it is to start with a layer of black, change teh mode to screen, and now you see through. Then I draw a solid white over the blade. I duplicate the layer 3 times (Ctrl+J) On the 2nd layer I gaussian blur 10 On the 3rd, 20 4th- 30 On teh first anywhere from .5-2, depends on how close or far. Those three numbers are interchangeable, 5, 10, 15...20, 40, 60 etc. Then merge the 4 layers. So now you have pretty well a White saber... Hit Ctrl+B for colour balance and go to town. Pump the mid tone colour of your choice to 100 and the highlight of it to 50. Thats the basic tutorial, and whereas it seems complicated, the results are amazing! Give it a try Kai It may seem like alot of steps, but its well worth it

Hey Primrodo, I am gonna offer to do rotoscoping on the new site as soon as we launch (Christmas Eve) so I might have to pawn off a few on you too I just made some new pictures of Master Tanthos that are rotoscoped, yours are very nicely done I must say I went about the easy way using layer effects and different sized outer glows. Peace be with you my friend,
