Nice! I was scouting around home depot and thought that the brass would make a really nice weathered look saber. I like the idea of the speaker/battery pack for an endcap. It looks like it could be a charging port.

Brass is a quick route to an elegant look. I like the direction that your work is taking and I like your idea for the endcap. I am curious to see where this project leads. The cutaways will be cool. It takes an extra effort to utilize cutaways and they can greatly enhance the complexity and intricacy of a saber hilt. This saber will have a used look to it and that will add to its realism.

nice! I look forward to seeing the finished product!
ALSO: Where did you get that round battery holder (or did you add some washers to it)??

Looks like it's out of one of the FX sabers.

Thanks for the comments. the battery pack is out of an FX saber - and I did add some washers on it to have the same diameter then the brass pipe.
I am thinking about putting imitation kevlar fiber in the cutout part, unless I find a better idea (maybe silver paint?), and the rest of the grip section would go with another tone of goldenish metal.
When I add the heatsink/led holder at the middle of the saber, one bolt will be in the grip area, but the other bolts will most likely be bigger thumbscrew style bolts to protrude out of the saber... I plan on 3 bolts total, so 2 underneat (like a stand.)
I still need am uncertain what I'll do at the emitter area, I think something is missing.
One of my objective with this saber (as opposed to my previous one) is to be able to change the batteries easily. On my previous saber, I had to remove 6 bolts and ply out the battery pack from the hilt... takes about 40 minutes each time (but I change the batteries only about once every 3-4 months)... I want to make this saber more pleasant in the maintenance part.

I worked over our thanksgiving long week-end to insert the electronics - pierced and taped the heatsink, soldered the switch and permanently soldered the led, etc. This week I plan on making the blade holder and I shall have a workign-but-not-finished saber for next week-end in convention.

I like the lighted knob feature quite a bit! What did you use/ how did you get the look? As to your battery changing issue.....the TCSS ( www.customsabershop.com ) has a sink tube adapter that fits inside a 1.5" tube and secures with two small screws. It has a threaded ens so you can use one of the threaded pommel styles they have and just screww it in. changing batteries is then as easy as unscrewing the pommel and sliding the battery case out. www.thecustomsabershop.com/sabers/Scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=30You would need to "brassify" it though to fit your motiff........

The lighted knob is a fan pull-chain-switch mecanism (2.50$ at home depot) and the lighting effect wasn't planned... but I really like it. It gets the light directly from the blade.
The battery compartment/pommel I can take off by simple unscrewing one bolt on this saber, which is an upgrade to the 6 bolts and hard-to-take-out battery pack of my previous one.
The blade on that saber is a red-orange luxeon 1W - rated 65 lumens (twice as much as my old green blade, and 150% of my new amber blade). I dig the luminosity of it, I still have to compare, but I think it beats the MRFX sabers in lightness. Downside is that the red-orange is more red then orange, so I won't use it with my Jedi costume.
On another hand, its great to have an opponent weapon while dueling.
Overall, I like the way this project went and am happy of the result so far.
