Right now I am gathering all the info I can on lightsaber techiques and styles and reviewing the similarites between the seven forms and the real-life material on Iado, Kendo and Kumdo. I am fascinated to see if we couldn't create more depth to the seven forms beyond what we have sketched out by various authors and sources from the EU. Anyone want to colaborate? That sounds like a cool project. I've always been interested in seeking out the relationship between the fact and fictional, although I can't say I have the time to put into it at the moment. I have several projects in my lap. I certainly could contribute, come February, though...

I've been dying to read shimmering sword but can't seeem to find a copy anywhere. I've been talking to some stuntman buddies to keep their eyes open while they're filming some dstuff of their own.
The thing about Lightsaber is that it's soooooo open to interpretaion that you can't really nail down a direct method of what is what. And if so it only works with that partocular group cause what I would teach a student may not be the same as what you would and so forth.
But if indeed the JA is going to incorperate a system for learning these then soem other groundwork has to be done first. However I think all are off to a great start My advice is if you want to really make an art
Pick up a star wars insider(probably not availiable anymore) or find out the info online in which it tells the seven forms and certain terminaologies and as well the visual dictionary for ep 2 and 3

Ky-Wann, Here's a pretty good link on the Seven Forms: www.answers.com/topic/lightsaber-combatAnd I ordered my Shimmering Sword from Amazon -- it was several weeks ago, I think (?) so hopefully they still have it (I lose all track of time...) I got sidetracked reading some other stuff, but found it to be very informative since I have no background at all in martial arts. Now that I'm doing some real fencing, some of it may make more sense, so I need to pick it up again. Tonight in class, this time I was the one who fooled my opponent (same guy) -- aha!! This IS where the fun begins.... ;D

That's a good link! Also, the "wookiepedia" (A wiki dedicated to Star Wars has about 80 pages on the forms and much else. I have printed it out but haven't gone through it all yet. References from its sources are well documented. I am not sure how much overlaps what is on "answers": starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_PageSearch for "lightsaber" and "lightsaber combat.

I will start off and post in this forum with a "research" thread..

Has anyone seen this DVD? [ftp]http://www.eitsrc.com/thumbnail.asp?cid=38[/ftp] It's on the www.fx-sabers.com website. I'm looking for a "review". And I'm also looking forward to the sharing of research. Our own branch of the Jedi Archives...

Well, if you go by their charts, I'm definately a Sokan user... Though, reading through their material, they do go over hand placement and fighting styles fairly well. Though...thirty bucks on how to spin a lightsaber? That's a little high...and Makashi users don't bother with spinning, I would imagine...as spinning a blade is really just for show.

YouTube is and excellent resource, and it's free. I could teach you in five minutes to do something basic in the hotel lobby at Dragon Con... or anywhere. I would be interested in seeing just what's on that dvd, before I tell you not to get it, though....

His tutorials covering both single and double bladed sabers are pretty complete starting with tutorial 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KChG_MM2HA4

Hey guys, Sorry I missed the conversation -- I was at fencing class. (No, seriously...) Thanks for all of the links (and "lesson" offers too), and I will check them out! I also still like the ones done by NYJedi. The reason I was wondering about a DVD is that I'd like to plug it in to the TV and follow it like an exercise video. (Doesn't work too well on a computer and I'm on a slow connection here at home anyway.) I actually was hoping for something a little more comprehensive than spins, but I guess we'll have to wait for NY Jedi or Qui-Kel. Fencing update -- got my mask and jacket tonight and we did some real workouts. In fact, two of the dads who watch every week have now joined in. Yeah! But when I got home I tried on my mask for my husband and he laughed uproariously. Said I looked like the little alien (Orion's master) in "Men in Black".
