Greetings from Atlanta -- Newbie here -- and I need some advice! After playing the kid's Lightsaber Battle game for a few months and then receiving the Anakin Force FX for my birthday this week (which is really COOL -- thanks, hubby!), I have discovered I REALLY like swinging a lightsaber. (And who doesn't? ) I'd like to get a little "real" training (and have an "opponent") and am seeking suggestions. Our county Parks & Recreation sometimes offers fencing classes, but I'm also wondering about other options. I've seen Kendo mentioned in other threads. I've never really been exposed to martial arts, and I wonder if I might be a little uncomfortable if there is a heavy "Eastern" philosophy. (Yes, I know Star Wars is influenced by Eastern thought....) So what do ya'll suggest, what should I expect in a class, or what other advice would you give? Many thanks in advance! I'm really enjoying this site and hope to make application in the next few months. Kryy

i would say first u have to learn how to use the weight of the saber...so just walk around the house and swing it around i would only do this in the livingroom but i do it in the hallway so i know how to use my saber in tight places without hiting myself
but everyone is diffrent so i would try alot of diffrent ways about learning to use a saber

Leda, WOW -- Those videos are VERY helpful! Thanks a million! More I will train.... Qui-Kel, YES, I would be very interested in your tutorial, and I'm sure others would benefit as well. (BTW, I hear you made quite an impression in Atlanta... And I agree with 2saberjedi about the weight of the hilt -- there was a Vader Force FX in a bin at Books A Million that one could actually pick up (as opposed to behind a counter out-of-reach) and once I picked it up, it was all over for me..... no more Hasbro..... no more Rubies.... And Hubby sweetly indulged me by letting my get the Anakin for my birthday. Ironically, I guess I turned from the dark side by picking up the Vader.... ;D

WOW!!! All I can say is...WOW!!! Those videos were sooooo kewl! Yes, Southern Order Saber Master Qui-Kel, I can see how you made such an impression in Atlanta. Thos NY Jedi videos were sooooo helpful, and sooooo cool! I'm just...awe-struck. On the Mundane side, yes, I can see how learning fencing might help (although I don't know if I would suggest fencing steroes; once the police are involved, the fun factor's kinda vaporized, yes? ;-D

The one thing that I like doing is mixing the moves that are illustrated in those NY Jedi vids, and choreographing them with a partner into a realistic looking fight scenario. It takes practice to look spontaneous! ;D

His strikes are quite nice, though the 8 basic cuts are slightly different from the way I was instructed but that's the beauty of swordmanship, the same idea, different interpretations
The videos are a nice touch but maybe slow mo a few of them

Leda, that NY Jedi website has a wealth of info -- and not just the videos, for anyone else who's reading this and might be interested. -- check it out! I've scouted around a bit more today. I see they're having some classes this week -- what a great opportunity for those in the NY area! And it seems they're working on a DVD. Hopefully they WILL do some demos in slower motion -- yes, it's always easier to get the feel of a move or sequence and then take it up to tempo. I also discovered this link which has some good general tips that might be useful to others. www.fx-sabers.com/saber_duel.htmlWish I'd found this sooner. Alas, I already have a tiny dead spot on my blade where I thwacked it a bit too hard. Fixed the link for ya. ---Leda

Not sure how to do the link -- it didn't post the way I expected. I guess I'm a techno-peasant as our office tech guy calls me.

I get to go to some of the sessions... but alas... NYC is still over an hour away, and time doesn't always permit. Wish I could partake in everything they hold.

im not a fan of the ny jedi tutorials, they focus on placing your sabre in specific ways in a fight, and i find that they look like a bunch of people who have no clue what they are doing....it doesnt look like lightsabre fighting. not to insult or anything, thats just what i see. i would prefer to learn an actual katana based style (what they were based off of in the real movies) and mix an match to make it more authentic and less....coreographed looking.
