Hey guys, Sorry I missed the conversation -- I was at fencing class. (No, seriously...) Fencing update -- got my mask and jacket tonight and we did some real workouts. In fact, two of the dads who watch every week have now joined in. Yeah! I loved fencing...though, I started working and never was able to get back into it. And a size 58 jacket, xl mask and foil, epee and saber are just sitting in a box right now. Fencing was pretty much the only exercise I had been getting...probably why I weight so much now (365lbs). Though, even the teachers and experienced fencers in the group wanted to fence me. Moral of the story...fat white guys can fence, too.

Moral of the story...fat white guys can fence, too. So can 48-year-old female desk jockeys who were never athletic as kids... Read my earlier post about hiding my face when I got up to bat! Solinbeb, surely there is a club in Denton/Dallas. You enjoyed it once -- try it again! It IS great exercise, and even wanting to be better makes me more inclined to get on a treadmill -- I'm working toward something and not just passing the time on the treadmill.... ho hum.... It is the first time I have done anything "competitive" since college PE and it's the first time I've ever ENJOYED doing anything competitive. (I don't necessarily mean a tournament -- I just mean bouting with an opponent.) There was a women there tonight who had been an Olympic fencer and then had three babies so was taking it up again after a 10 year absence. She and the master gave a demo of a bout with the epee scoring machines. So 10 years... I hope YOU'LL take it up again!

No it's more a thing about finding time. I wouldn't mind getting my wife involved...but she doesn't seem interested. It'd be a lot more fun if I could get some people I know into it...but fidnign time is my problem. Though, I suppose finding a job that doesn't ave me working 1 to 10 daily would help that...as that's one of the reasons I had to give it up the first time.

Yeah, it's hard to get together with other people when your schedule is different from theirs -- I worked retail for a number of years, so "been there, done that". And I don't have some of the family responsibilities that many others DO have, so that's what gives me the freedom to pursue this in spite of working full time. But I do hope it will work out for you again in the future! I was just in Sam's this evening and they were showing "Pirates" on the big screen TVs (it just came out on DVD on Tuesday) -- watching that again might be a good way to influence the spouse. (hee hee) "See, doesn't that look like fun?" Yes, I know it's different but I may give that tactic a try myself..... ;D [edited to correct typo]

Yeah, time is hard to come by these days... I would love to get my husband involved with some sort of martial art... something we can do together, but his hours are insane.

I know the feeling about attempting to put time in, any time. I would be glad if I could get 15 minutes--& then when you are only by yourself, you know you don't practice as well.

Well, it will all give us something to look forward to with the winter "letdown" after the holiday rush is over. :-)
BTW, one of the DVD versions of "Pirates" has a special feature about sword fighting with the cast. I haven't seen it and don't know how long it is, but you have to get that particular version of the DVD to get the special.
Apparently at WalMart there are 3 versions of "Pirates" -- the regular one ($14-ish), a 2-pack with a DVD on "Pirate Lore", and a "Special Edition" ($20-ish) that comes in a sort of cardboard "slipcase" with a window. The sword fighting special is on the "Special Edition".
I don't know what other stores are selling, but I know WalMart does some special packaging/features with their "blockbuster" DVDs, so this may be unique to them.
I will likely get a chance to check out the feature this weekend, so I'll report back. :-)

I find winter is the best time to watch films or read methods and then when summer comes yo uhave not only what you were learning before but things you want to work into it and that ultimately creates your style, and witht ime that can as well, change.

Fencing Update: Last Thursday, I got "wired" and fenced electrical (foil) for the first time. I was terrified at first, but it was great!!! (Told the coach it was like being in a video game...)
I have become totally enthusiastic about fencing -- I absolutely love it. OK, I know it isn't the same thing as lightsaber or "real" sword fighting, but I never would have pursued it if I hadn't first dressed up like a Jedi for Halloween 2 years ago and wanted to "do better" with a "sword". I'm not great, but I'm also not too bad, and I learn something every time.
[The second guy I fenced tried a couple of aggressive moves and said "I thought you would flinch, and you didn't!" He actually was surprised, and THAT was a great encouragement for the kid who turned her head while batting for fear of being hit by the softball. ;D ]
The more I read about fencing, the more I learn that it can really be good for mid-life women to help with endurance, weight control, strength training and prevention of bone loss, flexibility, MENTAL stimulation, etc. Plus one can excel even if one doesn't have the quickness or agility of younger people.
Thanks, everyone, for pushing me forward.... :-) And I'm working on my saber spins. ;D

Congratulations! ;D That's a great accomplishment! I took fencing a couple years ago for the same reson, and I liked it alot. It was just a basic 12 week adult class... it was a great workout for the legs!!
It's the same with karate for me... I don't ever expect to be an undefeated champion, but it's great exercise and like fencing... it gives you mental discipline.... like not flinching, and knowing how to balance your body, etc.
