So we know this is common--- opening locked things with the Force. Anakin does it to Palpatine's wrist restraints in RotS. Obi-Wan forces doors open in AotC. So why can't either of them get their handcuffs off in the Geonosis battle arena. I would have guessed it was because of their situation, but even after they got lost in the battle, Anakin had to cut Obi's cuffs apart with the lightsaber.
Any thoughts? ....aside from cinematic aspects, and the fact that it makes the story more interesing...

I honestly havent thought about that, and its a very interesting theory. I would put it down to making a more interesting battle scene, but perhaps count Dooku was holding together the bindings with his Force abilities, and not really concentrating on Padme (she's no Jedi after all). Its pretty far fetched though...

Humm lock picking would work since they can unlock things. It seems logical. I think they didn't use the force to undo the cuffs was cuz the script didn't have it written.:-D

I agree. It probably had something to do with that Dooku had special bindings so they coudn't escape. Then again with pademe involed they probably didn't need to free themselves and risk getting her killed at the same time.

I'll have to watch it again, but I think only Padme had cuffs on. It seemed to me that ANakin and Obi-Wan had chains wrapped around their wrists and then anchored to the posts...nothing to pick that way.

Or it could be that Dooku had nothing to do with the bindings themselves. Obi Wan seemed pretty unphased at being bound, neither did Anikan. Although I still stand by the "Script didn't ask for force lock picking' theory. I know they would otherwise, or merely with force assisted strength, rip them off.

of course it could work like regular lock picking does.....if you can't see it you can't pick it....if you can't get the pick into the lock your out of luck. perhaps they couldn't see it..........or simply sensed it wasn't important......or the time wasn't right.........

Hmmmmmm, Obi-Wan in handcuffs. Hmmmmm.....
Anyway, I think Dooku could have had special bindings for the Jedi. Obi-Wan wasn't able to break out of his bindings when Dooku was questioning him. But the Genosians may not have bothered wtih Padme. I remember reading a story about someone who made a pair of handcuffs that Houdini could not bread out of. Basically, they only worked once. The first time they were locked they lock broke. It's possible Obi-Wan and Anakins' bindings were like that.
Or, it could be that there wasn't much point to breaking away when they were brought out in the arena, surrounded by armed guards and a zillion giant termites and all. Once the action started, none of the guards were going to go near them, but they were kind of busy and couldn't take their eyes off the fight. And neither one of them seemed to have been bothered much about having their hands bound anyway. When they use the Force to unlock things, generally it's when there isn't somebody, or something, trying to kill them.
Ahhh! And his tunic in ATOC is lined, too! And under his arm; he has a felled seam!

Well yes, but I meant it as fictional speculation. " ....aside from cinematic aspects, and the fact that it makes the story more interesing... " Script included.

You know you've hit a bunch of costumers when they'er seeing a handsome Jedi, they'er discussing the clothing construction not the guy. HEHEHEH :-D
What's a "Felled" seam? I can barely see it.

It's like the seam that runs up the side of blue jeans... they fold it under and double stitch it for reinforcement. That's the best I can describe it. ...hehehe, and we can discuss the guy if you want!

Actually there is also an incident in the Jedi Apprentice series where I think it was Qui-Gon who unlocked an elevator door with the force... no that's not exactly right... it was something like that though... they were down a mine, or someone was trapped down in something and there were explosives about to go off... I can't remember--- uhg! I'll have to go and find it now or it's gonna bug me!
