Hello all...
I was curious of how many of you have played around with the idea of variations on the "Jedi Robe"...the "big brown outer robe"...or the Djalaba (sp) for the cultural term for the Moroccan robe it's based on...
While this seems to be the "traditional" robe, there have certainly been variations (Luke ROTJ, Anakin AOTC, and Barris AOTC)...like cloaks and capes...
An old issue of Marvel Comics Star Wars series (80's) shows an interesting hooded poncho (Luke is wearing this) which is worn belted. Looks very interesting.
I'm fond of a very simply "split poncho"...made by taking a huge rectangular piece of cloth, folding it over, cuttin a neck hole, and then cutting down the center of the front. This can be simply hemmed. It makes a very versitile cloak that can be wrapped, belted, etc. I used to make these to wear when camping...and they are very useful. I want to add a hood to the design, making it more "Jedi" looking I suppose...
Anyway, just thought I'd toss that idea out there...it's a cheap, easy cloak...no pattern required, and not much sewing capability involved...

Sounds like a RUWANA, very comfy, and practical, and would suit a Jedi perfectly. Add another "Rennie" to the mix.

Yes, exactly a Ruana. Very versitile... Here's a couple of pics to give a better idea of the garment I'm talking about...(found these on the net, don't pay heed to the coloration...just imagine it in a nice earthtone...) Yep, I've been accused of being a Rennie...among other things... --Kai

I have that blue onein a slightly more earthtone colour-mix, it's the colour blend called "Gypsy" It's one of my favourite things. I also have the skirt & jacket, I LOVE that company's stuff.

Hello there, Mynn... I've watched the Jedi Assembly in it's growth since very early on in it's history. I just recently got around to joining the ranks...Nice to see you here too!
It seems the ruana is fairly popular...

The blue one is handwoven cotton, got it from Greenwillow Weavers (I think that was the name) VERY COMFY & CUDDLY & WASHABLE TOO!) a little pricy because of the handweaving, but worth it, I wear mine for everything, cuddle up in house thing to go out to semi dressy party things with the skirt & jacket I have that match. The RUWANA was about $115. I think, got it about 5 years ago, still looks like the day I bought it.

I live in a very "arts & crafts" rich town. Berea Ky is very well known (at least in the state) as such.
I've seen WONDERFUL versions of ruanas and other cloaks from Churchhill Weavers here in town, in wool and other hand woven materials...very expensive sometimes, but BEAUTIFUL stuff.
The price of $115-$150 sounds very reasonable.
You could also make, or have made, a very nice one. Right now, for fall/winter, there should be some very nice woven, heavy, soft cloths available at your local fabric store. A local store here has some excellent stuff that would make great cloaks. Finding a pattern should be easy, if you need one...

I found a great alternative for the robes in one of my two costumes I'm working on, a long grey wool trenchcoat I'll be using for my Working garb, a muslin shirt, black pants, and a black Han Solo type vest, made from a BVD shirt, and the Coat, with the belt

I really like your idea Kai. It sounds awesome. I was wondering myself about alternate robes and what could be used. I was thinking a simple design myselft. A viking style cloak that just wraps around and fastens at the shoulder. What do ya think? I'm not sure myself. I like it but...

Thats the thing I like about Jedi costuming, it allows alot of personalisation and yet still have the 'look' of a jedi. While I couldnt wear any of the garments pictured above a nice cloak is certainly one alternative. A friend is currently making me a big lined cloak with hood (I made him a blaster he makes me a cloak in return ). It should fit right in and I gan even use it at other fantasy based LRP games. My friend James always goes to LRP games and plays a 'warrior monk', otherwise known as a jedi and often wears his outfit and gets away with it. Theres alot of historical costume influence all over the starwars movies so I think its good to look around for other alternatives from history or other cultures. I really want one of the outer cloaks used in the musketeers movies (in earth tones) but I know Im not good enough yet to make one properly with all those buttons Phil

oooooooh.....a lined robe!
Now that is too cool....way professional.... I would put a lining in mine...but I don't care for it too much anymore...now that I know that there is better fabric out there than what I used....will have to start saving my pennies.....I can probably make a new robe...but don't think I have enough expertise to line it...maybe I can make the robe by hand...and then hire some else to do the lining.
I do love the fact that the Jedi can modify their look to their tastes too.....so many combinations out there, and they all look very Jedi and very good!

Yeah, I like that too, 'cos I can make Jedi garb in lots of styles and wear them and nobody can say, well that's not accurrate enough. I think that I will make a different type of outer cloak after my next one. I have a winter cloak/cloak called a gaurdian that would be a really good style, it has a big hood and a shoulder cape pc over the sleeves, but it's very dark charcoal grey, I'd do it in a brown. but it would have to be for outdoor/coldweather wear, that thing is really warm.

I think I am going to regret the fact that my robe is lightweight tonight! Chicago Force is going on a Video Scavenger Hunt and I plan to wear my costume...it will be around freezing (32 degrees) tonight....I think I will be one cold Jedi by the evenings end...
hmm.....makes note to self....next robe warm and lined for missions on Hoth....and the cheesy lightweight for missions on Tatooine!
