Another thread that I somehow missed...oh well, found it now. When I make my Sith (not just Dark Jedi, but Sith!) I don't really want to make another full robe in black, so I think I'm going to try one of the suggestions here. Great ideas, all of them! ;D

I like the personalization too. I like the term Warrior Monk. I dont know how many times someone's called me a monk when they'd seen the brown robe on me. "You look like a little monk."

I couldn't believe my eyes yesterday. Wils and I were fabric-store hunting, and we came across a little sewing shop. I was exploring their bargain pattern counter, and I found a pattern for a ruwana for 25 cents!!! I definitely will be making one, maybe not for Ephanie, but I can't wait to find a cushy fabric and get started!

is this ruana(ruwana) style of robe/poncho everyone's talking, would it be acceptable as a robe for the Jedi Assembly and would it be considered an actually type of robe?

I would say, depending on the colour, it would be ok, but let me consult with the rest of the council before you take that as written in stone. Generally they are hooded, can be worn open or closed, loose or belted, and can be long or shorter. They are more like a cape or poncho than a robe w/ sleeves. Nova

saiagoh...
you have a pm....
I hope it helps....
some of the Jedi are never seen in a robe (like Aayla) and some Jedi have a modified robe with no sleeves (like Ki Adi) ....I feel we are pretty open minded here at TJA and my feeling is always that if the robe is in the tan/brown/taupe family....it flies with me personally...though i don't speak for everyone.
lol...I have two robes and rarely ever wear either...too hot....
we always try to stress looking as close to the film version as possible...it helps a lot when you go out in public where you run into people that are just casual Star Wars fans....general public can usually identify the screen version Jedi but not all of the variations....and since the BIG fun in being Jedi is going out in public...it usually makes sense to be identifiable.

The type of robe that has been mostly talked about on this thread was a "Ruwana". Sometimes spelled differently ("Ruana"). On the first page, I have a link that is still up to a picture of one of these.
Essentially, a Ruwana is a hooded poncho that is split up the front...having extra length that can be draped in various ways...
In a 1980's Marvel Star Wars Comic Book, Luke and Leia wear hooded ponchos that are belted at the waist. Also a very good look. The belt keeps the poncho from getting in the way during combat. I sometimes belt my Jedi robe in this way...it's an interesting look, and certainly keeps the robe from getting in the way. Of course sometimes I tuck my robe sleeves into my bracers as well...makes for a very "battlefield friendly" robe (anyone who's tried to fight in a cloak of any kind probably understands this...)...
Anywho... check on the first page of the thread for on picture of a Ruwana. Also, try a google image search for "ruwana" or "ruana"...

I have a Llama wool poncho, rectangular with a slit for your head that I bought in Chile and the pattern is like the blue Ruanna except that it is white>brown every one who sees it says "Wow!" Very exotic, very warm and if it had a hood.....Very Jedi.

Qui Gon wears a hoodless poncho in EpI on Tatooine. While these are not bad alternatives to a robe, the robe is one of the things that makes a Jedi recognisable to John Q Public.
