I was wondering if a robe or official Jedi costumes are must for Jedi.... I alsways envisioned my character as a non comformist. in other words... he wouldnt wear a jedi robe. He would be more likely to wear (star wars style) street clothes and for missions he would wear some kind of armor, but never a robe.

No, robes aren't a requirement. For a list of requirements and such read our Jedi Code here: www.thejediassembly.com/jedicode.php?PHPSESSID=97f5ec21e1228a2a98f27126312afccaWhat are SW style street clothes? From what I've read and heard, Jedi DO wear the clothes they wear to blend in better with the "common folk" of the galaxy. But they do also have a distinctive look in the movies that make them obviously Jedi. And that's what we do here. We WANT to lok Jedi. But there are MANY variations of the Jedi costume that you could do to look more individual. Just take a look at out site and see all our different costumes. ;D Does that help?

The best part is to be instantly recognised as a Jedi! Wait till you see a little kid's face at an event when you're the first "REAL JEDI" he meets and recognises! As Xana said, the Jedi waer thier style street clothes to better blend in w/ the majority of the beings wandering the galaxy, thay're also very practical and comfortable. You might understand the recognition factor better when you go to a con & people go, "uh, interesting costume, what are you?" It's much more fun when they KNOW you're a JEDI! And if you want to volunteer at events, LFM will only accept the "Canon" costumes that are easy for J.Q. Public to recognise.

I've twice been asked for my autograph. There were 2 young boys at the toy drive 2 weeks ago that were just in a frenzy over seeing a Jedi. They asked me all kinds of questions about my garb and my lightsaber and then one of them asked my to autograph the box holding the new OT DVD's! ;D

I have a robe, a few, in fact, but I don't wear one all the time. Sometimes I just like to wear the tunics.

Yes, It was really nice. We're doing another toy drive in a week and this time I'm coming prepared with a Sharpie!
I almost always wear my robe unless it's just way to warm.

I wear my robe depending on my mood.... if I feel thin....and it isn't cold out...I leave off the robe.. if I feel fat....I keep the robe on....

I usually leave it on to guard my ... um... pleasantly plumpness. Even in 100 degree weather Ihave been known to keep it on. But I will take it off if I get too sweaty.
But yeah a robe is whata lot of people of go by to think "Jedi". Without it you might just be another Medeval guy (or karate, or what-have-you) in a tunic.

While the robe isn't an absolute must, it does add to the overall look of the costume. Still, I know I got recognized when I wore the costume for an event up at work, even without the robe.
I had my robe made out of a medium weight synthetic, nothing anywhere near as heavy as wool. That being said, it was still a chore to wear. The first day I wore my costume at a convention, I wore the thing for 7 hours. I had the robe on the entire time. My shoulders were killing me afterward.
So yeah, make one if you can, and wear it if you can, but if you're going to wear it for a long time, bring some Icy Hot with you!

I made my last robe out of a "wool suiting" rather than a "wool coating" ....so it is not so heavy....and the flow is great....
