Most of the sources for the info are mentioned on the board in various threads, and in the canon sources, novels and some rp guides.

I read in the EP II visual dictionary that Jedi are free to wear whatever they want. The Jedi tunics ect... are a tradition not a uniform. As far as the color of braid bands I haven't come across anything; however, the explainations I've read here feel right.

I'm just digging up an old thread and checking on a few details. In online pictures of Obi-Wan, I see a yellow-orange tie in the middle of his braid and a red tie at the end of his braid and a long tail of hair below that. Did he have any other ties? Maybe at the base of the braid and if so, what color? I would expect there to be something at the base of the braid to conceal whatever was clipping the braid to Ewan.
The color codes are interesting. I assume the sources are the games? But I do wonder about Obi-Wan having a red band on his braid for piloting after his "Flying's for droid's." remark in ATOC

They probably used a glue to attach the braid, much more secure and barely visible at all. Yeah, I always thought the red -piloting thing for Obi Wan was funny too, he doesn't seem to like it in the scholastic books either, tho' he does improve, he doesn't seem to enjoy it.

Intresting read.
Old topic I know but Iw as wandering out of what has been mentioned in here what has changed over the days and days to the way colors are used?
BTW ewans braid was his actual hair. They show him getting his hair chopted in the making of EP1 on the new dvd.

I think the yellow in the middle is from when they were appointed as a true apprentice and picked by a Master and they continued to grow the braid form there. I do not think there is one at the top of the braid. Of course this is all speculation

I think there was a red band near the top of the braid. The best scenes to look I've found are when they first meet Jar Jar in TPM.
Actually, from the DVD, it looks like they started out using Ewan's hair, but the actual braid in the movie was much longer than his hair was. And since they film scenes many months after the primary filming of the movie, then they must have used an attached braid, since Ewan would have moved on to other work, and so he wouldn't still have that braid.
Also, in the DVD comments for TPM Lucas points out the scene where Obi-Wan's braid is on the wrong side. Apparently Lucas thought he was going to flip the image for the final film, but he didn't.

Hmmm. There could be... I'll have to get out my copy and really look. On my "toy" Rubies Costumes Obi-Wan braid there is not one, but they have the clip to contend with also
