in my opinion he did, i mean he doesnt adhere to the jedi code fully. he didnt bring back the traditional jedi garb. from what i read he didnt even remake the jedi council! also he only knows about 2 forms of lightsaber combat, the rest are gone and lost forever. either luke will correct his mistakes in the future or all the post-rotj jedi are doomed to be inferior to their old republic counterparts
discuss.........

You gotta give the guy credit for bringing back the Jedi, but I agree that he was not ready to do so. IMHO he was NOT fully trained, and definitely not ready enough to be the Master of many many padawans. I think the whole Exar Kun scenario speaks of that.

this is just a theory, but i think he should have searched the galaxy first to try to find any jedi that escaped the great purge then with their help try to rebuild the order. but no, he jumped right to rebuilding the order

Actually, he did lots of searching the galaxy. He didn't start the Jedi Academy until "I, Jedi" which was seven years after ROTJ. And he does try to start a Jedi council in NJO to deal with the Yuuzhan Vong, but the Peace Brigade gets into the political system and screws that up. But give the guy credit. He restarted the entire order. Think of how long it took to get the Jedi Order created in the first place. It started thousands of years before the movies. His training was not the regular training of a Jedi. He was taught specifically so he could defeat Darth Vader. That was the only goal of Obi-Wan and Yoda. They knew that was the only way that the Jedi could exist. And Luke gave the system a reboot.

I think he will give it some differences, which could be good for it in long run. Like we hear Anakin admit angrily Jedi can't be married, yet Luke marries Mara Jade and I think that's a good thing. Sometimes it's good not to repeat the mistakes of the past, even though there was also good about the Republic Jedi system too. But I think that those few mistakes led to their downfall in ROTS. JMD

Luke was more adhering to Old Republic Jedi rules than some of his apprentices. Kyp Durron and Kyle Katarn used Dark Side powers all the time. They walked the line between light and dark, or so Luke saw it. Others, like Corran Horn, say the Force as more of a greyscale. Things could not be defined as light and dark so easily. Luke upheld many traditions of the Old Republic Jedi.

I think that Luke, has to revive the jedi order and rebuild. Like anything new one makes mistakes. But let us not forget the old jedi order failed and was defeated by the dark side. It was Luke's love for his father that made Vader become Anakin again bringing the force back into balance. Hence "Return of the Jedi."
Luke had to restart from square one, so of course its different. He didnt ruin it he changed it. Change is what keeps things alive. Isnt the essence of the force life after all?

but all the skills, teachings, and wisdom of the old order are just gone with the wind. i find that a bit depressing. but in my opinion the old jedi order only failed because they went for a thousand years without any darkside/sith opposition and they were somewhat unprepared for the new sith threat.

Somewhat unprepared? Even Yoda didn't know about Palpatine being Sidious. Sith are incredibly good at hiding their presence: Sidious, Exar Kun's ghost, even Maul while on Tatooine and on Naboo until he takes off his hood in the hangar. As for the Old Republic Jedi teachings being gone, that's far from the truth. Luke took what he learned from Yoda and Ben, and he passed that on. When he starts the Jedi Academy, he takes his students down into a cave beneath the Massassi temple into a hot springs. He takes them through a tour of the galaxy with the Force so that they may learn to be at peace. He even recites the Jedi Code to them, "There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no death, there is the Force." The reason Luke can't have things the way they were in the Old Republic is because there are not enough Jedi to have it that way. They need to breed the Jedi back into existence. They do that with the Solo kids, and Ben Skywalker, and the Horn kids. The Jedi need to grow. Personally, I think the no marriage rule is dumb. If Anakin had been fully permitted to marry Padme, maybe he wouldn't have had nightmares about her death.

The second line of the Jedi code is "There is no ignorance, there is knowledge." As my Sociology professor says, "Knowledge is fluid, dynamic, and everbuilding." Rest assured, the Jedi Order was reduced to nothing, but like the Phoenix it returns better than ever. The old Jedi wanted stability. They did not want change. But change is natural. Life is about change. The Force is about life.
