Mine are much longer....about a foot below the wrist and they bunch up nicely. I cut on the bias and make them quite tight.
the nepali blouse is obviously not movie-accurate, but I like it.

Yes, my fake sleeves are as long as a real sleeve, and they are very tight. Ruched up, it's about half.

This is the only picture I've seen of Qui-Gon's undertunic. It's actually the stunt double, but I assume he's wearing the same thing Liam had on. You can really see how bunched up the sleeve is around the wrist.
On my latest tunics, the sleeves are pretty long, but I don't want my them to be too tight, because I want to be able to push them back a little so I can wash my hands without getting the sleeves wet, too.

Wow, thank you so much, Kryy... I read all your posts on using the McCalls pattern, and I think I will try that one... I love the way your undertunic looks in your membership photo... How much longer did you make the sleeves? That is, how much beyond your wrists do they go before they're bunched up? I was thinking about 6 inches... when you say you cut the lower half of the sleeves crosswise, did you use the pattern piece, or did you just cut a rectangle of fabric? I'm planning on using a lightweight gauze fabric since I get hot easily... at C-IV I ended up taking off the t-shirt/dickey combination mid-day.... not an easy trick to do since I can't take off my belt by myself.... LOL Thanks for the kind words... To answer your questions: my sleeves are 10 inches longer than wrist length, so they bunch up nicely. But I'm tall with long arms, and as I said, I like a lot of fabric. For the lower sleeve pattern, I used the pattern graph paper that was recommended in the pattern (for making alterations -- link [ftp]http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/D733.htm?search=palmer&page=2[/ftp]). I drew the pattern piece to match the upper seam (the sleeve piece I cut off), then my arm length plus 10 inches, and the bottom was wide enough to slide over my hand plus seam allowance. The lower arm pattern looks sort of like a team pennant with the tip cut off. It's all straight lines drawn with a ruler, and the graph paper helps with accuracy. I lay the wrist edge of the pattern at the selvage (no hem) and the top "hits" right at the fabric fold. (Confession -- that's another reason for the 10 inches -- 12 inches won't fit if I cut double thickness ... ) Does that make sense, or do you need a picture? A thought -- this may not be any cooler than the t-shirt and dickey set up -- it IS a real shirt, but the natural cotton fabric does help the costume breathe. When we were at AdventureCon, I wore the dark brown undertunic down to the hotel lobby to get coffee before finishing with the rest of my costume (yes, my belt is a tug-of-war too ), and I was perfectly covered up and modest. I would only do that with the dark brown; the lighter colors are a bit "see-through". But I do like my costumes to be more like real clothes -- that's just a personal preference, but it helps me feel more natural in them and less like I'm just wearing a costume.

I think I've got the picture... It'll be awhile before I try it, I packed away my sewing machine for a move I'm not sure when is happening... I also packed away my costume and discovered stains from some unknown source at C-IV, so new obi and tabbards may be forthcoming. I think it would be cooler since the T-shirt I used is rather heavy, and the dickie has a high collar... I like the V-neck look of the Ep. II Jedi tunics (like Obi-Wan's) so that's why I really like the look of this pattern. I agree on the real clothes idea... I don't like being pinned together or worrying about something falling off, although I did pin my tabbards to my tunic... I enjoyed walking around like I dressed like that everyday... Putting on my belt is a riot, the fasteners broke off, and it's too big anyway, so I have to hold it in place while my husband fastens one of the pouches on to hold it together... and the clip on the pouch is very tight and doesn't want to go over two thicknesses of leather... at least it is very secure when he's done... but every time I sit I have a pouch poking me in the back...

but every time I sit I have a pouch poking me in the back... Yeah... driving in full costume is loads of fun... I have a feeling that Obi-Wan and Anakin were NOT wearing the pouches when they were sitting in their starfighters.... Let me know if I can help in anyway when you're ready to get going again... I know about the "when are we moving" thing. We did that in March... oops.... off topic... sorry.... I owe Roan some thread links...

For Roan (and others who've had trouble with the "search" feature) -- these are some of the "sewing" threads I've found most helpful so far. I've printed several of them and put them in a notebook so I can refer to them anytime I working on (or re-working on ) my costume. Don't hesitate to just scroll throught the threads and "educate" yourself. And don't forget the tutorials and links! I may have already posted some of these, so if so, sorry.......!!! ;D Undertunic - I posted my favorite threads above. I'd suggest making this first, for two reasons: 1) You can "practice" sewing the silky or gauze fabrics, and if you goof, the outer tunic will cover it. 2) It would be wise to wear the undertunic if you need to "fit"/alter the outer tunic pattern. Tunic - "2 part" (Even if you don't go that route, you might want to read -- it also talks about skirt shape, lining, etc.): [ftp]http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=937[/ftp] Sleeve style/length - [ftp]//http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=934[/ftp] Shoulder tuck threads posted earlier in this thread Band/Trim - [ftp]http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=983[/ftp] Tabards - mentions seam, which can help with "fit" and neatness: [ftp]ttp://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=939[/ftp] Obi - General [ftp]http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=920[/ftp] and [ftp]http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=947[/ftp] Obi "Wrinkles" [ftp]http://apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=985[/ftp] "Hidden Pockets" [ftp] apfoister.proboards9.com/index.cgi?board=TaP&action=display&n=1&thread=958[/ftp]Or you could just follow the pattern instructions and not worry about it... ;D
