I have a small problem. I have recently attempted to have a new Jedi tunic made for myself with full under tunic. However, I have to supply the fabric myself which is fine. Unfortunately, I've looked at both of my wal-marts and the only two small fabric shops in the area and I have found absolutely nothing suitable for a jedi overtunic or undertunic in weight or comfort. Which really only leaves me with online sources. The main problem however is the fact that I can't feel the fabric or see it in person other than swatches (that the company may or may not offer). I was wondering if anyone knew of any very nice quality jedi tunic materials. Cost is an issue but I am willing to go within a certain range of cost as long as it lasts. Any help is appreciated!

I have gotten crinkle cotton from fashionfabricsclub.com. Their prices are good and they deliver promptly. Thaisilks.com has silk noil for $5-6 a yard as well, though I think it's narrow. This also makes good under tunics.
Since it's an under tunic where only the collar and sleeve show, plain, cotton t-shirt type material would work as well. Can you find any of that?

Hmm, do any of these fabrics have a kind of crinkled look to them like the ep III obi-wan tunic was made of? I was hoping to find something that looked like that.

If you have a JoAnn's Fabric in the area, check there. I picked up my linen calcutta there. I don't usually like them a lot, but this fabric has been really good. Easy to work with, wash-n-wear, looks authentic, etc.
It has the crinkle look of Obi-Wan, and the bolts I found were the right color without needing any dye.
Good luck on your hunt!

I was really impressed with the look of your calcutta cloth tunics.
I'm going to look for some, myself.

Very interesting...that's definitely not the same stuff I used for my costume. I did a little digging in my costume archive and was able to locate the receipt from my JoAnn's purchase. Here's the pertinent info:
SKU#: 8597411 Description: Solid Natural Calcutta Price: $2.99 per yard
Honestly, I tried to locate this fabric on their website, but with no success. I located it while on a business trip and browsing through the store. I purchased the only 4 yards they had, then located a full bolt of 8.5 yards at the JoAnn's back home (Tulsa) and bought it all.
You might just try to call the closest store and see if they can look-up based on the number I just provided. When I first found the fabric and didn't have enough, they told me to have my nearest store call the warehouse and have them order for me if they didn't already have it on-hand.
I hope all this info helps you find what you're looking for and isn't information overload.
Good luck in your search! ~Darcu

I was going to say, "don't buy linen from JoAnn's". But that's not a bad price for linen/rayon. Ivory may be too white. It still might be better, if you're buying on line, to go with one of the links I posted above as there are more color options. That SKU doesn't work on the JoAnn website. Neither does anything come up searching calcutta You could try Linenweb (fabric-store.com) www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?goto=showarticles&menu=f&article=1

There's always Osnaburg from WalMarts, at $2.27 a yd. if you goof, it's cheap enough to try again, nice colour too. Better for outer tunic, tabbards & obi, a bit heavy for an under but is 100% natural cotton.

Yeah, I could never get the SKU to work on-line at JoAnn's, either. The folks in the store said it is because it is a seasonal fabric that isn't always carried. The store's may have access to some fabrics that aren't available on-line.

One note about crinkle cotton. It has a good crinkly look, but most of the time it's too thin for a tunic unless you want to line it as well. I've made a tunic from osnaburg cotton and it looks good. It has more of a nubbly texture than a crinkly one.

I have on occasion lined the crinkle gauze w/ osnaburg with a pretty good result, not easiest for a begginner tho'
