Now I know in the extended universe stories you can have whatever colour you like, but in the films it seems to me that padawans have blue and knights have green. Does anyone know if this is correct? and are there any rules about blade colour?

it all depends on the crystal u choose. In episode 2 u see younglings with blue and green training sabers.

try this on for size, i went the elemental path.
gren is for earthen jedi, blue sky or water jedi, and reds and oranges for fire jedi, i also read that some where awhile back not sure if correct but it sounds good enough for me. so i am a fire jedi i guess since i choose the deepest fireiest orange for my saber blade.

I don't mean to bring further confusion to this.... but what of Mace Windu...... his is purple?
But, don't fear! That I think was a behind the scenes thing! Samuel L. Jackson asked for a purple blade and GL granted his request! That's on the special features for EP. 2. It also has something to do with Mace's being an electrum lightsaber! What's that? No clue.......

eletrum, is similar to the ametist stones one terra, purple to me would fall in between air/water/erathen jedi, to get purple you have to mix red and blue, lol.

Okay.....
I found out the difference in Mace Windu's lightsaber. It is called an electrum lightsaber because it has an electrum finish!!!!! It, just like the others, has focusing crystals!!! What the crystal color means I have no idea!!! Sorry.

That sounds pretty. A sparkly, gold saber blade.

Hi.
first post here.
Ive always wandered about the colours of the blades but i could never find a good reason explainig the choice of them till i played Knights of the old republic and it has a nice expenation concerning the colours. I know it conflicts with many ideas but i thought its a nice one.here goes. the colours depend on the status of the jedi and it has to do with the rpg also. explanation: blue is for jedi guardians.the fighters of the fedi order.the ones who focus on saber battle and like to solve problems after the vzuun sound ocurs.
yellow (plo koons color) goes to consulars.the jedi who mostly prefer not to hear the vzuun sound when solving problems.using the force mostly.
green goes to the sentinels.a balance between the two above.
that supose to be the believes in the era after exar kun and before episode 1.
as the jedi advances i believe they start to make their own choice of colour especialy if they find a better crystal to use.
now after times has passed crystals became more rare in conclusion a limited choice of colours....
Just sharing thoughts
thanks for your time

The way I've always envisioned the crystals (agedan crystals) used in lightsabers and the subsequent color of blade is that there are simply a few color possibilities due to the rarity of crystals that will actually produce a lightsaber blade.
So far, in the films, we have seen only blue, green and now purple for the Jedi. Lucas' explanation when asked was pretty simplistic: good guys have blue and green, bad guys have red. Sam Jackson specifically asked for purple, and got his wish. He's fond of purple, often seen wearing his purple hat on set.
As for the electrum part, electrum is simply an alloy of gold and silver, used in adornment such as jewellry and in some cases decoration on sword scabbards and so forth. The electrum on Mace Windu's saber is on the hilt itself, having nothing to do with the crystals. Apparently, only senior members of the Jedi Council may carry lightsabers with electrum on the hilts.
As to color indicating "rank", I prefer to think not. But, that is something yet to be addressed by Lucas personally. It may indeed have something to do with it, but that remains to be seen...
Multiple colors in the Expanded Universe are interesting to a degree, but it sometimes gets tiresome seeing so many different colors of blades... but, each to his own. I'll keep my plain old blue lightsaber... That's the wonderful part of the Expanded Universe: diversity. Some great ideas come from such thinking...

Here are some facts and theories as well as some of my own thoughts on the subject.
Fact: the earliest idea for the lightsaber blade color was white but that was changed buy the time ANH came out. The main reason for the color difference between the sabers was so that the audience could tell them apart during fight scenes. The green color came about in ROTJ because color tests showed that blue did not show up well enough against the desert sands during the sarlacc battle. Again, in TPM, they chose blue and green to tell Obi Wan and QuiGonn apart and red for Maul because of Vader in the OT.
film necessity aside, the SW Insider (in the same issue that details saber combat) states that red crystals are ordinarily too unstable to be used in lightsabers however when charged and focused by the dark side, they become stable and in face create a "stronger" blade which can on very rare occasions "break the blade" (burn out the power matrix of) an opponent's lightsaber.
I would theorize that blue and green crystals are the most commonly available, purple and other colors are extremely rare and hard to find and red is unsuitable for lightside use. Like the overall design of the lightsaber, I would think that the color is a matter of personal choice by the individual Jedi.

Nicely put I really like your description there. I played KOTOR and they stated (as someone did above) that... Blue: Jedi Guardian (the people who like to fight) Green: Jedi Sentinel (the people who like to make peace) Yellow: Jedi Consular (the middle men, who like balance) when I played and answered the questions I was a Consular... of course that could be because I don't like confrontation, but will fight if I need to. My character, AnJoh Zaji, uses a blue in right hand and a shorter green in left hand. Peace be with you,

I'm with Kai, I have a Blue one You all covered the colour fact pretty well except that teh original good guy saber was red. Anakin Starkiller has a red lazersword When they decided to add colour it was for dramatic effect, up to Obi-Wan and Vader. Red is an ominious colour and Blue is one of the most pleasing. In ROTJ Luke was supposed to have blue, but as said above they abandoned it for green as the Blue sky pretty well made it dissapear. In TPM Qui-Gon had Green for the same reason, but also, IMO, to differenciate (sp?) between the two Jedi. "Oh its Green, must be Qui-Gon" In AOTC it is revealed that every Jedi has Blue and Green only, even Plo Koon (Sorry no yellow for you ) Again as someone said George very simply said Green and Blue for good guys and Red for bad. Its a stylist choice, plus its part of the 3 main TV spectrum, RGB. As for purple...that WAS Mara Jades first, and shes canon Sam wanted to be able to point himself out, and thats really fine and all GL allowed him that...but look at all the other jedi in the arena...Mace gets all the pampering lol! Other colours are interested, but as Kai said they do get tiresome. I heard some have dual colours in EU? Creativity is great and good ideas DO come from it, but to me, canon is canon. Besides Blue is my colour
