OK, I took apart the Anakin saber... it was a mixture of fun and frustration!
Phineas's instructions were good, except he left out the fact that there are two small pins that need to be pried out of emitter tube where it's attached to the plastic sleeve inside. They are very small, and I pried them out with a tiny screwdriver. The do not go through like the large pins.
The large pins that he says might have to be "tapped" with a hammer had to be POUNDED with a hammer and screwdriver... LOL.... but as soon as the textured ends were out, I was able to grab the pins with the pliers and pull them out.
I scratched the big button a little, but I call it "battle damage".
Removing the decorative plate by the switch was delicate... the corners bend easily... go slowly and have the patience of a Jedi...
HINT: Scrape all the dried glue out of the copper button holders before regluing. They will fit better. And it doesn't matter if you break the plastic pins off as long as you line them up where they're supposed to go and use enough glue. (Mine will never come out again. LOL)
The biggest problem was getting the blade out of the emitter. It did not slide right out, in fact it did not budge with my gentle pulling and prying. My solution? My husband. He says "You don't care about the blade, right?" I say, "No, it's trash." and he proceeds to bang it on the kitchen counter until it moves a little out of the emitter. Also, he sprayed the blade with cooking spray to make it slippery. A lot of pounding later it finally slid all the way off.
I put it back together, and it looks great and the sound still works. I didn't really have any leftover pieces, so I may have put more back into it than I needed to. But there was really only the big black piece and the battery pack...
All in all, it was interesting and I see why you guys like to take these things apart! I wouldn't try it with a new one because of the cost involved... no way would I pound a new blade on the kitchen counter like that... LOL...
If I decide to convert my Obi-Wan to an Ultra, I'll have to give it some more thought....a lot more thought...
