i dun think the pouches should b one of the more expensive parts of the costume. u can buy cheep, non-authentic pouches made 4 business cards + stuff + with just a little die + work, they look very real plus, i dun think that all puches should b the same, in my oppinion the robe + possibly boots r the only parts that should look just like the 1s jedi's used in the movies, or it will loose the originality that makes each costume special

Well, with the voice of experience speaking here, from wasting thousands of dollars trying to cut corners over the years.....unless you are very talented and can take the time and care to make an authentic piece, I'd say save up for a good replica.....Over the years (40 +) I have seen some pretty tacky costumes with people making a costume they say "will do" or be "just as good"....and it isn't. I wish I was talented to make my own accessories, and I do think that individuality is great and very important. Not all Jedi look the same. I think we all witnessed that in ATOC. Every Jedi, although they had a standard belt and pouches, their tunics and boots were very different.......I did have to substitute for my food capsules because I can't find the Stadtler pens, but I looked long and hard to find a pen that I thought was close to the real thing.
I guess what I am trying to say is, if you are talented enough to make a good piece that is going to last, then go for it. Don't worry about being different. Just what ever you do make yourself...make sure it is as close to authentic as you can get it. We are all being scrutinized out there when we are dressed, whether we do it for ourselves or as a part of the Assembly......My firm belief is you get what you pay for......From experience ( I know, but I'm old, so bear with me) It is so much more fun to have someone ask "were you in the movie"....rather than "who are you supposed to be"........

AGGHHH!!! Round 2 of the new boots saga, the 2nd pair arrived on sat., well they might fit, but the design prevents me from getting my foot in the thing, so back they go, for another try, I ordered them in a larger size, so hopefully they will go on, and not be to big.

Well round 3 of the boots saga was a similar disaster, the boot went on but the foots 2 big, so back they went. No more mail order for me, I have to try them on. I think I'll check the riding/tack stores next time.

Nova, I go through the same thing trying to buy boots in the mail. I think I've spent more money in return shipping costs than what I would have spent on the boots if the fit was right! I have a very wide instep. Most of the boots would actually fit me if I could get my foot past the shaft! The boots I finally ended up with are E width and I got them from the Chadwicks Catalog. www.chadwicks.com

Won't fit my calf! I'm just gonna go shopping, maybe I'll find a pair in the UK when I go over, for now I'll stick with my short pair.

My calf is my biggest problem. They are 18 inches and all of the boots I have tried on were 15-17 inch calves. Men's and womens. That is why I had mine made, and unfortunately, they got the calf to big and my foot slips out and they look funny on my leg. I did find a tack shop in town that hand make them and they do the measuring. I can't afford them right now, but this is where I will get my next ones......

As to the "vinyl/leather?" debate, as Don Solo said in another thread (Vegetarian Jedi Boots), leather belongs on the cow, not on a costume made for fun.

Ah yes but I eat beef so wearing it is just using the cow to its fullest potential. No waste.
Nothing wrong with wearing leather or not, I don't think anyone should be told what not to wear or what to wear.
Luckily in this day and age those with the vegetarian or those not wanting anything to do with leather have more options than say even 5-10 years ago. CABoots has fantasic vinyl boots and would work great on a costume. AND they come in brown!

I love my leather boots- they're fab. I have to agree with Primrodo- If you're willing to eat beef, you should be able to wear leather. Just my $.02..
I find leather to be stronger than vinyl, and much more attractive (and not as hot, as it doesn't trap the heat as much as vinyl.)
My boots actually had to be taken in on the calf- none of my boots truly fit properly- they bang around on my calf like those rubber farmer's boots unless I have them adapted.

Speaking of rubber boots, there are rubber riding boots you can buy new for around $50 to $60 if you are strapped for cash. You can see them here: store.yahoo.com/crazyhorse/chalrubdesbo.htmlI have worn them back when I was working with horses and they can be comfortable, but they do get hot out in the sun when showing in a dusty ring and no trees around.
