How long does a robe have to be? My main robe drags the ground a little bit but there is another I've had my eye on that comes only to mid-calf or so. A little short but it is by far the better robe. The hood is much larger and it is more billowing. Is mid-calf too short?

I prefer my robes a little on the short side, but that's because I hate the thought of tripping over them.

Yea I trip over my other one all the time. Drives me nuts! I guess I'll have to try the new one on with my costume and see how it looks for sure

Many of the Jedi in the Geonosis battle arena are fighting with mid-calf length robes. I'm sure that was done for the purpose of the fight scene, to prevent tripping. I noticed it on disk 2 of AotC, in one of the documentaries where they show a whole crowd of Jedi running out into the arena. I'll see if I can find a screenshot.

I've got my robes hemmed so they are above the heel or top of the boot so I don't have to worry about tripping or getting stepped on, dragging on the ground or fraying, which has also happened too much. I got my robe caught in a door, tripped & stepped on too many times last year so I decided safety 1st. screen accuracy 2nd.

Agreeing with Jan-Qui... a shorter robe is more convenient for "missions" - mine is about 1 inch from the ground when I am standing, but when I kneel for pictures, people step on it. Also, when I climb stairs, I have to pay attention not to trip. I don't think it looks wrong if it is shorter, as long as it is at least lower then the area where pants/boots joins. Keep in mind that a longer robe will damage quickier then a shorter one.

I don't not like the look of a robe that's above the ankle to mid-calf. Despite the Geonosis scene, I don't think it looks accurate. I hem mine at the bottom of my ankle bone. I don't step on it when walking normally. Like any long garment, one has to be mindful on stairs.

I also agree with Jan-Qui and Olos. A good illustration of this is in Episode III when Obi-Wan is speaking with Anakin about spying for the council. There's a 3/4 overhead view and a full length profile in the scene that shows the described length quite well.

Robes should be made so that they are just touching the ground. Although when the actors wear them they usually seem to be just a bit shorter. Here's a great pic to see the length - Here's the shot that JW mentioned

However, for real people, when they touch the ground, you trip on them. So an inch or two above is good.

If you compare how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's robes move you can see that Obi-Wan's is hemmed to the ground when he's standing; so it drags a little when he bends his knees. But Qui-Gon's robe is a straighter cut and is hemmed an inch or two off the ground when he's standing; you hardly ever see it touch the ground, so that might be the length you're looking for.
I tried a mid-calf length robe and I never liked how it looked; I have short legs and it just made them look shorter. It's a great bathrobe now though.

I think Qui-Gon's robe was more a factor of Liam's height and the width of the material than a real costuming choice.
