I like my robes to drag on the ground just a bit. It looks really cool. The trick to not tripping on them that much is to make it so that the sides and back drag a little but the front doesn't. That's how Mace Windu's robe is, for instance, in Episode II (take a look at the shot of his feet when he's sneaking up on Dooku and Jango... the back and sides are dragging but the front is up over his feet or boots). Of course, OTHER people will still trip on your robe a lot if it drags a little, so I make sure that my robes are sturdy enough to handle that kind of abuse. And that gets a little aggravating after a while, of course. But I just love the look so much...

the whole people tripping over my robe would drive me nuts. mine would be a more "battle robe" where it was long enough to look good but not long enough for people to trip on. i would hate to ever have to bring myself to battle and then i trip over my robe. you dont always have the chance to drop your robe like they did in the movies, sometimes you are stuck with it on because you are taken by surprise. and in circumstances like that i am ever the practical person.

My robe used to drag on the ground, but after Halloween, I had it trimmed. Here in Oregon, it rains, you see. The lower quarter of my robe was completely soaked. Now it is much more like the robes you see on screen. When I am standing still, it comes an inch or two above my heel. I've tripped over my robe a few times, but I've never fallen down, some quick "force steadying" got me out of those problems.

I like my robe to stop just so that it brushes the top of my foot when I walk. It's not all the way to the floor, but it's close, and from a high angle, it looks good enough. Here's the shot from that scene I was talking about... It's not the one I remembered, but it's from the same documentary.

Too short, if you ask me.

Yeah, a robe that length would drive me nuts for a Jedi costume. But it's fine for a bathrobe.
I've only had one robe failure converted to a bathrobe.

i dont remember if it was on one of the dvd's or in the DAG book, but i remember someone saying that they made LOTS of robes for obi wan in AOTC and when they got wet, they suffered a little shrinkage...it's possible they recycled those robes for these scenes. just a shot in the dark...anybody know the order in which these scenes were shot?

I like mine a shade shorter in front and just off the floor in the back. Liam Neeson's robe length probably was his preference, the robes are cut with the lengthwise grain of the fabric so width of the fabric would not have any bearing on length of the robe. Unless it is a specific of the design that a hem hit in a certain length then usually the costumer who does the fitting will do what makes an actor most comfortable. Speaking of Liam Neeson, I saw him at work earlier this week, he came to see the new show at our theatre, he looked fabulous as usual, and was smiling and looked very relaxed. I was smiling too! !

Yeah that was in the dressing a galaxy book. I remember laughing at that. The water scene was definitely shot first. I think it said they shrunk during the swimming scene in Episode I, on Naboo. I wouldn't be surprised if they did recycle some of those robes for AotC.
