We've seen Over robes made of cotton, wool, raw silk, With long sleeves without, long and short, but I haven't seen one made of leather...yet. Look at the link below. It shows sort of what I'd like to tackle. www.ravenswoodleather.com/index.htmlOnly differance from this one to my idea is, the hood would be larger, sleeves full like the regular robes and removable.(Laced on with the lacings hidden by a tuck of some sort.) I'd change the fastenings to something else or not have any at all. Think that'd look cool or what? OIpinions please.

Well, I can't think of any reason why the robe couldn't be leather. If Jedi wear leather or leather-look tabards then robes should be OK. Sounds like it would look fine, though possibly a little stiff. The hood, when it's down, might stick out a bit behind you.
You might have to go for pleather or some other synthetic if you don't want to have to deal with odd shapes and seams to make it from. That might make it a bit warm.
Personally, I prefer fabric. It's more recognizably Jedi since all the Jedi in the movies wear cloth robes.

Pleather would be a bit hot, and it gets a bit fishy smelling when it gets sweat on it. (Yeeechhh) The coat in the picture doesn't look too stiff. Probably a lighter weight clothing grade leather. I think the leather is a very very soft sort, so the hood doesn't stick out from the back. I have a fabric robe and LOOOOVVVEE it, so do the animals. I think if it's made in the jedi style it'd be recognisable that it's jedi even if it's leather.(Oh it'll be cocolate brown.)

be a bit expensive wouldn't it?
What about a hybrid robe? Cloth hood, leather sleeves, leather front panel with cloth side and back? or some such combination?

I don't think that a hybrid would look very Jedi. The robe is distinctive because it is one large, solid color.
I had no idea that pleather smelled like that when you get sweat on it. Ewwwww. I haven't used it for any costumes, but it looks good in the fabric stores.
Yes, the lightweight, clothing leather should flow well and be comfortable, but you will have to piece it together because you'll never find it that big for a robe. So, you'll have to get it to lay really flat so the seams don't show much. I'd check out the pattern and figure out how many sq feet it needs before buying the leather. And if you can get to a store that sells leather, you can pick out pieces that are exactly the same shade of brown.
It sounds like quite an ambitious project!

I don't know... leather robe seams just... SITH to me.
The only jedi with leather tabbards was Anakin, see what it became.
All-leather clothing seams abnormal for a Jedi, at least in my mind. The robe is one of the most recognizable jedi trait, having it altered that way seams like.... wrong.

Here's some detail shots, including a brown coat (Ha! Firefly!).... www.ravenswoodleather.com/raven/ladyraven.htmlIt does look cool. If made with a Jedi robe pattern, it would look Jedi. But I agree, it could be difficult to find pieces big enough for the pattern pieces. My robe took 9 yards of 60 inch wide fabric. Leather requires special cleaning, too. Personally, I only have things I can toss in the wash.

Primrodo - I didn't realize her tabbards was leather... my bad. Is she in EP3? I think she survived the arena, right?
This being mentionned, if the leather is pale ennough, I guess it could pass Jedi ennough. Yet, It would be pricey, heavy and hard to clean... I still prefer fabric over killing tons of small tatoine rodens to fabricate the cloak :-P

I think leather looks better when it's cut closer to the body. There are some Jedi in the comics that wear leather, but tighter leather, I think. Actually thinking of it, a leather robe would look really Klingon! The garments on that site would look really good on you just the way they are, Mynn.

With the halloween activities comming soon, I start thinking that the leather robe isn't all that bad as an idea with the fall cold of Montreal and an hour walk in costume outside in the evening...
I guess I have to put a jacket underneat my costume..?

Well Leather or cloth doesn't denote Sith or jedi to me. Since there's thousands of jedi from various worlds, cultures and species, the clothing will show their culture, traditions but will BE recognisably jedi. . A few we do know of sport leather. That's right primrodo. Barriss Offee, Shaak Ti.(Tabbords down the front of the costume and /or bracers) Bulter Swan, Anikan. Might be a few others but either we hadn't seen them yet or they'er in comics. Thanks for the complilent Leda. I do like the clothing there. They'er definatly 'save up for a cool goodie" type. Himokmo, I've a few leather items that aren't very hot to me. I also have no problems keeping them clean cuz I've the products to do it myself. Plus it's relaxing for me. And I keep my eyes open for dry cleaner's sales for leather clenaing.(sometime sit's $25 for a fuoll lenght coat, they clean, re dye and water proof it.) Olas, FIUnding large enough poeices won't be a problem. The Leather factory store is in walking distance of me. As for Exspense if I use club discount card I save a percentage on the price. I know the guys there so if I haven't all the money for the item, they can put it on lay-away for me and I can pay in installments. While during the pay off time I can practice making a muslin over robe and work the bugs out of the design before I even slice leather. It would take a LONG time to doi because Ihaaven't an industrial machine. I'd need to hand sew the entire item. How jedi is that?-D Loreen, I can send the site's link to you. They'er coat is only a beginning, it's not the finished product. I'd use their pattern and modify it. www.ravenswoodleather.com/index.html try this. You'll need to cut/paste it.
