I like the look of leather & whatever works for you. I personally prefer my cloth Jedi robe.

If you've got a Leather Factory that you can walk to I'd say go for it! I have to get everything online or shop when I'm out of town.
Oh, I don't think you'll need to to hand sew it. Not if it's clothing weight leather. Just get leather needles for the machine you're using. They have a wedge point that goes through it fine. And regular (but good quality) thread that matches your leather color will do as well. I made a leather Starfleet jacket (like Picard's, but in blue) with my machine with no problems and I think that leather is heavier than what you'll be using.

Humm. Picard's duty jackt is VERY nice. Looks classic even without the badge. Soimeone in Ft. lauderdale made one of black and a grey and it looks very nice. people are always asking her wear she bought it. Heh heh. WHat a cool compliment. The maroon uniform jacket from Star Trek movies 3-6 has lines. I'd LOVE to try making that one from suead ater I've mastered it's patter n in gabardine. :-D
I don't mind hand sewing, sometimes I've greater control then with a machine. I'll definatly be asking the store guys for advice on which weight of leather to use, and snag some needles for the machine and hand sewing needles as back ups if the sewing machine can't handle it.
Janqui, I've a fabric over robe as well. It's prfect for mildly chilly days. It's not wool, ugg, it'd make me pass out in Florida's humidity and heat. I will make a wool melton one thoighy just so there's one around. The leather is for much colder weatrher like in the New England states. Plus I want to experiment with a new meduim and do it because it'll be hard. I want a challenge.

I know how to get to a site by copying and pasting the address, I just can't seem to get there using any of my browsers, it's freaking me out! I've never seen that happen before.
I've been to this site before, I have it in my favorites, but it keeps coming up "can't find website". I thought doing a restart might help, but it didn't.

A leather cloak/jacket was actually an in joke when I was doing my fan-film for my character Solinbeb...which made him look like Silent Bob (the Mallrats appearance.)

Do you have a firewall that runs as a proxy server? If it's going nuts then maybe that's what's bogging down your browers.
Or check your privacy settings for the cookies. That kept me from accessing TJA for a it til it was changed. Bribe it with dark chocolate it works.:-D
It's showing the "Error 404" thing?

I've been wanting to have one made for ages, but haven't wanted to ask her (due to reasons I won't go into here) to do it for me. I've wanted one in either all black leather (smooth for the body as well as the shoulder panals) or all black, with smooth leather for the shoulder panals and black suede for the body. Might be a long-time coming, but I'm sure I'll get it made oneday

Well, my mum actually has two copies of the pattern as we were sent two by accident. I don't think she'd be able to photocopy it because of the size, but she'd probably be happy to let you have it for a few bucks to cover postage as she's been trying to sell one copy for ages with no result

There's a PATTERN for that jacket? Geeez, now I find out. I had to wing it. But it still turned out well. I'll have to wear it to DragonCon next year.

We purchassed it about 10 years ago from Majel Barrett's mail order company, Lincoln Enterprises, but they don't seem to have a website... There's a PATTERN for that jacket? Geeez, now I find out. There is, but as above, it was purchassed nearly a decade ago. I'll email my mum and ask her if she can see what the pattern number is
