I remember someone saying on here that Obi-Wan's Ep III Robe didn't have any shoulder tucks. However I found this pic from one of the exhibits, and it looks to me like there are some; just a thought, perhaps something we could rant about for a while.

dunno who would have said that but yeah it was noticable in the movie, both AOTC and ROTS. Anakin also has tucks in ROTS.

I wonder if those shoulder tucks are hiding a shoulder seam perhaps? You could get more robes out of your fabric if the sleeves were cut as separate pieces.
It doesn't look like the Qui-Gon costume next to it has any tucks. Just when I think I'm ready to cut my fabric, I have to wonder about shoulder tucks.

Ani, I've got great new wool flannel from Denver Fabrics that I'm waiting to cut until I see this exhibit in Nov. Given that we can't lift the sleeves, I'll try to figure out what I can from looking at the garb as it hangs, as in the above photo.

I don't think all robes have or would need tucks at the shoulders. To me it is like adding shoulder pads. If you have broad shoulders you would not need the tucks, ie Liam Neeson. Whereas someone with a slim build, ie, Ewan McGregor, would need the tucks.

Perhaps some of the FIDM people there will know more about the things on the costumes that don't show on the display? One of their collections managers was at Costume Con this year, so they're friendly to the costuming community. They have Costume College at FIDM every year (intensive costuming making workshop) one of those things that I mean to do someday.
Yes, the robe on the right doesn't have tucks. The picture is on the Padawan's Guide page and according to the caption, it's Qui-Gon's costume. The tucks seem to be a later fashion among the Jedi in the second two movies, though I don't see them on Mace Windu in the pictures, even in ROTS.
I'm not that wild about the tucks. They look fine on Obi-Wan, but I don't know if they'd look that great on me. But they could make it easier to fit the costume. Just make really long sleeves and use the tucks to adjust the length. Plus, they add a little pleat to the body of the robe and may make it hang better.

I know I'm just wondering myself whether to put tucks on my future new robe or not. If it will give me a shoulder seam & save fabric I'd be all for it. It could also be usefull for hiding something under the robe at conventions, if it was needed (tote for carrying things--like rain poncho or small items that don't fit on the utility belt). It could be velcrod or a strap put there--it would be hidden by the tuck.

Liam Neeson doesn't need the shoulder tucks, he has nice wide shoulders. I think they do the robes in varying shades and styles because the jedi don't wear a uniform, just a unified look to the styles, so that they are recognisiable as Jedi, but can also blend in with most local populations, and not stick out in a crowd.

Yeah but Hayden Christenson is tall as well and his robe in Episode III had shoulder tucks. So maybe the tucks is something someone thought of later on?

Exactly my point, Liam N. Has Huge Wide Shoulders! I've seen them naked! Ewan and Hayden are both slim with sort of narrow shoulders. T Biggars also said that every Jedi costume is deliberitly different.

well Ewan didn't have tucks in TPM, My guess is that it was more a style trendy thing to do during the time.

Also in TPM he was a padawan still, they would want him to look smaller and a bit more vulnerable, next to Master QuiGon.
