In the start of Phantom Menace, when OWK and QGJ are on the battleship, their robes are closed. Is there a closure near the neck? Or are they just holding them?

I think they have fasteners on their robes. But only at the collar. They couldn't be holding them in place with just their arms. The robes are fixed at the neckline.
I have 3 small, black snaps sewn at the collar of my robe, which is dark brown, so they don't show up, plus they get lost in the folds of the robe when it's open. With the snaps I can have the robe closed at the neck, like they do in the movie, but I can just pull it open, too. I used snaps because velcro, while easy to sew on and fasten, makes a much louder ripping sound than snaps do when you pull it apart.

Mine has a hook-and-eye fastener that's big, like for a coat.

Mine has the same as Leda's, a hook and eye fastener for coats just at the neck. As the metal is very dark brown on mine it matches the robe colour very well and they cant really be seen easily I dont often fasten it closed but its handy sometimes for certain pictures.

I've never seen any evidence of a closure. The robe is heavy enough it might stay closed like in that scene for a moment. However, the hood is so huge, it is constantly pulling the robe off my shoulders. I think I'm at the point of canon or no, I'm adding a small hook and eye. I'm tired of carrying a lot of stuff, in the rain, only to have my robe slowly crawl off. It can be added on the inside so it isn't visible when you don't want to hook it.

The hook & eyes that are covered in thread like they use in fur coats are really good & barely visible, can be gotten at very good sewing notions stores.
As for seeing the fastner, they might have sewn it in for a scene & removed it afteer, I don't think I've ever seen it, but then, they might just have pinned it fron the inside for that scene, I've done that sort of thing on photo shoots many times.

My last two had fasteners, but like a lot have said, I rarely closed them. When I recently took my hood off to line it I left the closure off. Like everyone's saying, personal preference.

My robe's hood used to be as voluminous as Darth Maul's, now it's Qui Gon's size. Unfortuantly it still crawls away at times. During parades I have to pin the robe too me or it'll slowly inch it's way off me. :-) I have more problems with people stepping on the back.

I did not do mine this way, but they have snapss hidden in the seam. The snap was installed and then the hem was rolled to hide it. If you look closely the over lap is not flat, but the edges are push out. I did mine with heavy duty velcro.

I bought a magnetic, metallic snap at Ben Franklin during my third time shopping for costume. You won't be able to see it once hemmed, and it's very, very strong. Plus, I felt that the magnet would be SW-ish in technology.

Magnets can be great closures where it's away from your wallet. But I try to avoid having them on my body because a really good one can wipe out the strip on your bank card. I think if it weren't for that problem, there would be more of them around.

Humm. Magnets huh? Interesting. How strong of one should be used.

I once forgot and put an ordinary, flexible fridge-type magnet into the same totebag as a computer disk. Corrupted the disk.
