I do believe they run on a "Diatium Power Cell", which is basically just a REALLY strong battery. I also believe that they do need to be charged every now and again
I know they can explode when they are created, because the beam is not a perfect arc, and cuts through the hilt when it bends back on itself. So i suppose adjusting it too much might make it explode, although a Jedi would keep any adjustment knobs within the safe threshold when building it to avoid this, i would think.
One question I have; if a lightsaber works through a focusing crystal, then how can the blade slowly extend? shouldnt it just pop into existence at the point where the energy is focused??

this has annoyed me the most can someone answer please?? what do lightsabers run on is it like an everlasting power unit Lightsabers have a power source in the hilt; by my rough calculations it would have the power output of around ten billion cell phone batteries. It can presumably run for hours and hours of Sith bashing and blast door melting with no appreciable decline in lightsaber performance. The lightsaber power source is otherwise known as "Movie Magic".
About the blade slowly appearing; I suppose maybe the focusing crystal has to take a second to warm up, so the blade appears to "grow" from the hilt. Or it could just be designed that way for dramatic effect. I don't think the Jedi are above putting a little flourish in their traditions. That part makes me think that there has to be an adjustment for the blade length. And that way Obi-Wan could sloooooowy activate his saber for his finial confrontation with Darth Vader.

In I, Jedi (I believe), Corran Horn's saber had two settings, normal and friggin huge! Didn't Corran have a little trouble with that friggin huge setting the first time he tried it? That adjustment always seemed a little too phallic to me.
The power setting for the blade makes more sense. Without some way to turn the blade "down" Jedi would be risking their lives just to spar with each other. OTOH, they are supposed to be so good that sparring with live sabers wouldn't be a big deal. But still, there must be times when they need to tone it down.

hmmmm im going to go with your crystal warming up theory that seems to be the most logical answe to the question sabers must run on amazingly strong power sources becauseif you think about it in rots towards the second half of the movie how much does anakin use it without the need to recharge

In the visual dictionary for TPM, the covertec clips are marked as charging ports, so I've always thought that they take power from the belt units while worn, so they're constantly charged when then used

That makes sense. In the book Shatterpoint, Mace's lightsaber was sabotaged so that it lost it's charge. Does anyone that read this remember the details?

heh heh "Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes, I will do what I must..." Fzzzzt!.... crackle crackle... ".... oh cr ap" LOL! I guess they sorta had that idea with AOTC and Anakin's busted lightsaber... "Not again; Obi-Wan's gonna kill me." I for one would not want to be anywhere near a malfunctioning lightsaber, let alone be holding one in my hands. Imagine the mishaps that could occur- the blade coming out like a mile long bolt of lightning, or the hilt itself exploding like a nuclear bomb. Has anything like that happened in any of the comics or novels?

or the hilt itself exploding like a nuclear bomb. It would've been funny if that had happened with Anakin's saber, and a much better way of losing an arm than having it lopped off by a Sith Lord

Has anything like that happened in any of the comics or novels? Yep, in a book I have called the Crystal Star, a Sith has a saber that is activated via the force, and when he travels to a space station that is near a dying star, there is a disturbance in the force. He activates his saber and it works for a bit, then just sparks a bit as it kicks the bucket. No fancy explosions, i guess that would have been a very anti-climatic way for the villian to die

if indeed lightsabers blew up like nukes why didnt the jedi invest their time in makeing malfunctioning sabers for the clones to randomly run into the enemy forces and activate them lol (like suicide bombers) lol
but wouldnt it be funny if yoda goes to palpys office and then activates his saber and then it sparks and deactivates lol "malfunction my saber has, unfair this is, hates me the force must"
