Hey guys, I am getting my generic Jedi outfit totally redone and I am thinking of using muslin for the outer tunic. Its a nice fabric with a bit of texture which is nice for my uses, but the only thing I wonder is, is it tough? can it withstand rolling on the ground, duelling etc. I have some pics I can upload for those curious about it too -Justin

I would say, it depends on the weight. Most muslin I've seen at, say, Jo-Ann, is rather light weight. I also find it wrinkles a lot when washed. The most likely spot for it to tear during action is at the seams. So, taking extra care with the seams might be a good idea I don't think you can beat the toughness of medium to heavy weight linen. When prewashed and then washed and dried between wearings, it doesn't wrinkle as badly as muslin. store.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/x-295.htmlI've had one garment for nearly 15 years, now.

I used muslin for my Han Solo shirt...and Kai's right...it is a tad lightweight for rolling around in...
reinforce the seams.....and make it slightly larger to accomodate all that movement without seams ripping...
if you are doing fan films...the muslin would probably pass muster because of the "10 foot rule"..... linen/cotton blends are usually pretty good....and tough...and relatively inexpensive....
Phoenix textiles (on line) usually has a good variety for $5.99 per yard....and now that spring is on its' way...light colored linens and blends should be common place...
I am heading to Joanne's here in my neck of the woods on Sunday...gonna finally start my Princess Leia ANH gown.....I will keep my eyes peeled.....they should have the spring fabrics...

Thanks for the replies! So do you think Muslin is not great for an outer tunic if I am being active? Aside from linen's what are some good tough materials....just before I jump in and get this made. Thanks

Osnaberg (Osnaburg...not sure of which spelling) is still my favorite....it is a nice color, inexpensive (usually less than $3.00 a yard), natural fiber (100% cotton), gets softer every time you wash it, and is fairly durable....but it does ravel...so it is best to cut the fabric with pinking shears or better yet.....if you have a friend that has a serger....have them serge the fabric once you cut out the pattern.....

There are some heavier weights of muslin up to canvas weight, but they aren't always easy to find, and they do wrinkle badly. I use a heavier weight of cotton, similar to med wt. denim or lt. wt. canvas, I like osnaberg and a fabric called Monk's cloth as well. My fave is raw silk noile, which takes alot of abuse, is washable and very comfortable to wear and has a great drape to it, and I use med. wt linen alot as well. Wash & Dry to preshrink any of the above and press before laying out with your pattern.

Raw Silk, Silk Noile & Thai Silk are all pretty much the same sort of thing, just make sure the weave is a linen like weave, It's my favourite for tunics, washable, and it breathes well so not to hot or cold, this stuff is great for outer tunics.

What do you mean a linen like weave?

Linen weave is not shiny or to smooth, looks like linen, made of silk. Look at the pics that are posted in the Anakin AOTC thread on this forum, those are linen weaves.
