Greetings, I am an aspiring member of the Assembly (western order) and am in the process of putting together my Jedi garb. I've never been a huge fan of the "traditional" brown/tan color scheme, at least for my own garb. While the pattern and style of my garb will retain the normal Jedi look, I'd like to change the colors. My plan is to have the inner garb (tunic, obi etc) and tabards in some sort of medium grey and blue, (I haven't decided exactly which piece is which color yet) and have the outer robe black. Please note that I am not trying to emulate the Sith or other "dark Jedi" look, I am simply choosing colors that best suit me.
Please let me know if these color choices are acceptable. Thank you and may the force be with you

I must refer you to our Costuming standards for being a member of the Jedi Assembly:
Applicants must possess or be in the process of obtaining a Jedi costume. This costume can be any style seen in the Star Wars movies or described in the novels and magazines of the Star Wars expanded universe. This Assembly is for Jedi costumers of the light side of the Force. All Jedi must have a Lightsaber, a utility belt, and boots. Robes and capes are optional. Any brown or tan Jedi costume or variation from the movies is acceptable. “Dark” Jedi costumes: Only Luke Skywalker (Return of the Jedi), Barriss Offee’s, and Luminara Unduli’s (Attack of the Clones) costume styles are being accepted at this time. No Fallen-Jedi or Sith practitioner costuming will be accepted at this time. Completely Black costumes will NOT be accepted. New Republic/ New Jedi Order/ Expanded Universe: Any Jedi costume or color from the Expanded Universe is acceptable. However, members must cite their source (book and page number) as to what Jedi wore that particular costume or color, and submit it the Jedi Council. Any Jedi costume portrayed in the Clone Wars cartoon is acceptable, and must be recognizable as such. If someone has an original idea they are encouraged to submit a well-lit picture and write-up to the Jedi Council for review. There are many exceptional Star Wars costuming sites on the Internet that welcome Star Wars costumers from around the world. The Fighting 501st Legion of Stormtroopers and The Rebel Legion are the two most well known of the bunch. This Assembly is Jedi exclusive. I appreciate your want for creativity, but we must adhere to our "Code".

For the record please know that I am not trying to be argumentative or cause trouble with these questions. First off, I have most of the requirements to join already and the belt/boots are being made/modified as we speak. However when I finally have the finances to create my robes (when you are 6'6" and 350 lbs as I am, it takes a LOT of fabric to make a costume, I want to make sure I do it right and I'd rather not have to create a separate Jedi outfit for each group that I work with. I'm trying to find a balance between all the requirements and my own tastes. That having been said, I have a couple of points to examine and see if we can find a balance:
First, I refer to the Episode 2 visual dictionary page 16 (yes, I realize this section in part leads to dark Jedi but I feel it noteworthy nonetheless) "The tunics, robes, and cloaks worn by Jedi are honored traditions, but not uniforms. From the time they become Padawans, Jedi are free to dress as they choose"
Second, the costuming standards contains the phrase "variation from the movies" I feel that this is what my proposed garb is to the letter. If it would help, I can work up a full color illustration of my proposal and submit it for review.
Finally, I have a question regarding costumes in the style of Luke's from ROTJ: Do they have to match his costume exactly or can they be something with a similar feel ( such as a different style of "shirt" or top under the tabards) Basically, with this, is the goal to dress as "Luke" or is it "my character Jedi billybob happens to wear an outfit similar to Luke's" Depending on how things go, the ROTJ "style" may be what I go with.
Once again, Thank you very much for your patience and time. I await your answer and will respect your decision.
May the force be with you

You pose some important questions that are very valid. I appreciate your interest in Jedi costuming. This matter will be discussed among the council now.

Humm Medium Grey as the inner under tunic, the blue as the outters would look VERY nice.
A rebel legion Jedi had Grey under tunic, blue overtunic(Not a bright blue, like a heather blue I think.), Navy Tabbords, Navy blue Over Robe Navy tabbords, Black pants.. I don't remeber the color of the Obi if was Navy or the same color of blue the Over tunic was.
It reminds me of the water and sky when I used to live in Seattle Washington. Seattle Jedi colors..:-) Is your charactor a Healer? (They wear the blue color scheme.)

I haven't fleshed out the details of my character yet, however I myself am a healer of sorts, I'm studying to be a RN. So the healer aspect may well be a part of my character.

That's right, healers are blue themed aren't they. Well personally I think it sounds great Always nice to have a little diversity I think. Have fun making it!!!

I have also been a big advocate of being creative....but the bottom line is.... what do you intend to do with your costume when you finish? If you plan on doing some stuff out with the public...like maybe a charity event, or screening, or something of that nature....be prepared for the fact that few people, if any, will figure out what you are trying to be.... If you are ok with that....then that's cool ..... As I have said...ad nauseum...both of my Jedi versions are pretty accurate....tunic, tabbards, sash, belt, robe, boots, lightsaber and pouches... I have had many compliments when I wear the light colored "looks like Qui-Gon" costume... and I just get a lot of head scratching when I wear the dark brown "doesn't really look like anyone" costume... and yes....a costume is a large investment...so I gotta ask.... what do you plan to do with it when you are done? just something to think about...

I do plan to do a lot of public events while in costume, I don't mind questions and head scratching in the least. I go out wearing my lightsaber a great deal as it is, and that alone gets a great deal of recognition, even more if I wear the "smudge cloak" (see my introduction thread). If nothing else, I enjoy the chance to talk about what I'm wearing, how I built it etc, and perhaps inspire someone else to try something like it themselves.

We don't allow a blackover robe because it'd be seen as "Sith". We'er not being nasty or anything, just the rules in the costuming portion. <shrugs> No blakc over robes. Or dark, Shadow or Fallen jedi. Now if you want a person who can make a VERY good Jedi Overrobe for under $80, and is accruate pattern and color wise to the movies. He can make it from anymaterial you'd like but the price will reflect that. The wool versions will defiantly be more exspensive.(If you'er hot natured or live in a very hot area, the wool version will give you a stroke. . ). You may be able to work with him if you already have fabric on hand you want to use. He may make it cheaper. Let me know if you'er intersted, and I can PM you his Email addy. He made mine and it rocks. MY next one will be sleeveless.:-D

The council has concluded their deliberations on this matter. Basically, we think that a Sith look would be achieved with this style costume. Unfortunately, if we allow one black robe, other than the black costumes we DO allow, many might want to have one also. We have to stick to our guidelines. Jedi Xana has stated that As for Luke's costume, as well as Bariss's and Luminara's, the original intent was they look as accurate as possible to those characters. That way they are recognizable to the public. I understand it's an investment to make a costume, but we want to look like, Jedi, right? Jedi Gochi states if you make a costume for yourself/your character that you are happy with..that is the most important thing....after you are done..send us a photo....we'll vote on it...If we decide it is too Sith...you are still welcome to be a forum member...worse case scenario...you will have a costume that appeals to yourself....as long as you (the maker) are happy....who cares what we think.... If you do care what we think ....then stick to more of the "standard issue". If you could submit a drawing of your intent Jedi "Smudge", then we would be happy to review it. I hope you understand our decision. We are the most flexible as far as costumes go out of all three costuming groups, but we do have to keep our guidelines as such. I thank you for your continued interest in the Assembly. May the Force be with you!

I understand the decision and I thank the council for it's time. I'll send a drawing off as soon as I have the time to do so (dealing with finals at the moment).

No problem Smudge. I'm sorry you can't use the black robe for this costume club, but that's the rules.
I do hope the finals go well. Goodluck on the Finals. I've dealt with a bought of those for 5 years. Glad that part is over.
I do look forward to seeing your drawing, I think it will be quite nice.

ditto....
I personally love seeing all of the variations...too bad we all aren't independently wealthy...we could have a whole closet full of Jedi garb of all different styles.......
and even though most of us make our costumes ourselves....it still gets pricey when you consider a robe takes about 8-9 yards of fabric....and even a set of tunic, tabbards, and sash takes around 6 for the complete set...well...it adds up....
