The delivery droid is on his way to your quarters, I also drew out some very rough sketches, of my tabard, and the Obi Wan sleeve detail, which I tried on my client's tunic, it was really easy, and looked really good, He liked it a lot, and the whole outfit looked really good on him. My favorite to date, next to mine.

Muchas gracias!
I am going to take my time on this one....I have almost 3 years till Celebration III..... and 2 years till we assemble the "Assembly" ! I will have a couple seasons to look for fabric now...and i really do think I need to find a bigger fabric store.
(gonna keep pushing that one....I think it would be a real scream for all of us to go out to dinner to some marginally fancy place in our Jedi costumes!)

Now that you mention it..... Come to think of it, I have spent more on my costume than any of the other clothing I have (which consists mostly of baggy shorts, baggy t-shirts, baggy sweatshirts, and baggy bib overalls!).

That would be fun! I would love to see the looks on everyone's faces when we all walked in in our costumes. Hehehehe............what fun. Apparently, Czuco has already done it, right? I think I spent more on our costumes too than on clothes for myself. I think I own about 10 shirts right now, and they are all t-shirts. I don't have a single piece of "nice" clothing. But hey, I'm a grad student, I'm supposed to look poor and starving !

Nova... the delivery droid made it to the sub-basement... thanks!
Found that what I used for fabric was very similar to the silk linen that you sent....and boy....are you right...does it like to unravel!!! I noticed too that all the scraps were light colored...same as what I could find.....could not find any in a black/dark chocolate brown....hmmm will have to keep looking....at least I have a sample to stick in the clerk's face and say....
"dis is what i want....only darker!" ;D ;D ;D ;D

Glad you got them, I'll send you a scap from my robe, which is very dark brown cotton. Were you able to make any sense of the sketches I sent?

I think I made sense out of all of it.... The bummer is that I went to a new fabric store (Hanthingy Fabrics).....went in there clutching the cloth pieces you sent....looked around and could find nothing so I asked a clerk.... I held out my precious scraps to her and asked her ...."Do you have any material like this in black or a really dark brown"....she looked at the material and said.. "What is it?"...I knew I was in trouble! I said..."it's linen".... she pointed in the vague direction of their linen.... I finally found their linen selection....It was grim to say the least....nothing even close!
The other thing that puzzled me is that their "linen" was marked 50% cotton....50% polyester.... I guess I assumed that "linen" meant cotton.... now I am really confused... to make a long story short...I came home empty handed!
I guess I will just have to go back to Joanne Fabrics in a couple weeks and see what they get in....at least the clerks at Joanne seemed to know a little something about fabric.....this chick at Hanthingy was a big zero!
I also ended up tearing out the hem on my robe this weekend. After seeing the actor wearing it in that fan film...I decided that the hem was too wide. The hem was one of the only things I had someone sew on a machine and it looked WAY to wide....so I tore out the stitching...cut away some material....made it narrower and have begun sewing it back by hand.......

I was at Wal-Mart today...and found something wonderful! It's a khaki-ish color three-quarter-sleeve shirt, with some leather lacing up the front. For my costume I'd planned on using my black pants and black tank top, but I also have khaki pants....and my new shirt looks like a perfect tunic! *bounces happily* ~Ryss ;D ;D ;D

Schph, No, that wasn't linen, the clerk was clueless and doesn't care about her job, linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant, it is a natural fiber, with cotton, and wool, linen is the oldest of the woven fiber fabrics. polyesther, is a 20th century invention. You might find other fibers done in linen weaves, like my silk, but linen is linen only when it is made from flax. I'll dig up a couple of real linen scraps and send them, along w/a scrap of the brown stuff I used for my robe. If you can't find anything up their, I can always get it here and ship it up, or the fabric store I use can probably ship it if you mail order it, I can be there to make sure it's the right stuff, anyway we can work out something. Unless you're in a huge rush for it, don't just settle for something that's just OK.

I just discovered a Huge like huge Jo ann ect in my town. I 'm in the desgining stage of my coustume and alot less intimadated. I just really think I'm havin a hard time with fabric. Can you get wool? I'd like to make a winter cloak so I don't get cold and What is the diffrance between a cloak and a robe. I have a serger and plan to take some sewing classes so I can actually use it. I think my exspectations are a little high for my first try. What material flows the best for the robe? linen is so awsome by the way.

Yes, the cloak or robe can be made in wool, it's more expensive, but will be right because that's what is used in the film, they used wool that is about the weight of an army blanket, very warm indoors or in warm places, where do you live? I found a beautiful lt weight brown wool a coulple of months ago and plan on making a 2nd robe from that. No real difference between a robe & a cloak, some people say that a robe has sleeves & a cloak doesn't, I use that differentiation at the costume shop I work at for clarification. Most fabrics will flow well enough if they aren't to stiff, and are cut properly, I like the method of cutting where I cut a very wide neckline &(faux) cartridge pleat it into the right size at the neck, this give really beautiful flow to the back of the robe, I then pleat other areas, such as the shoulders, and the hood, I'll email a pic of the latest one, as soon as my boss emails it to me, it explains what I mean better than words. What kind of serger did you get? I've had mine forever, and I love it. but be careful until you are used to it, I used to cut away bits by accident at first, especially at inside cuts, go for the lessons, lessons are always good. The robe in my picture that is posted on the members page is a very heavy cotton, the rest of it, all the natural coloured parts are linen weave raw silk, which is my favourite fabric.

Well, MY exasperation at fabric has reached fever pitch..who knew it would be so difficult to get the fabric you want.... So Nova...here are the results of my latest trip to Joanne.... The clerk said that the linen is a spring material because it is lightweight...they had none on the shelves...and even when they DO have linen, it does not come in dark brown or black! I found a bolt of the same material that I used for my tunic...it is a muslin....100% cotton..so that was good... I also found a bolt of the fabric (in another color) that I used for my robe...found out that stuff was a (shudder) 100% polyester called Suedecloth....I know it is not cannon for costumes but I gotta tell you....I love that suede cloth! It flows great, is easy to work with and the wrong side looks like the stuff is lined! So, is the information that the clerk at Joanne correct? Linen does not come in very dark brown or black? Can or should muslin be dyed black or brown? Bows to Nova.... Help me Nova Darklighter...you're my only hope!!

Linen does come in BOTH BLACK & DARK BROWN, there are places in the city that stock 144 colours of linen, Mulin can be dyed, no problem it's a natural fiber. Usually polyesther is uncomfortable because it doesn't breathe, but there is no real reason not to use a fabric you like, synthetic fabrics are normal in the SW universe, think SYNTHSILK, so if you like it use it. I don't use a lot of synths, cos I'm allergic to a lot of the, they make me itch.
