If anybody has a swatch of Calcutta cloth, they can send me, I'll try taking it to the fabric places I go, they may order it if I can show them what I want.

Nova what size of swatch & color of calcutta do you want to have? I have bits of cream, sand, chocolate, natural. I know we didn't get any of that material at Joanne Fabrics this year & Han_thingys doesn't exist in Joliet any more. Please email or pm me. I can send you some. Please send me your address by pm & I can send you some.
Also I noticed when I did locate it last year the material looked not quite like it used to when it 1st came out. If you could locate the rich chocolate (they used to make the rich chocolate--which was sold in Walmart) but the last 2 years the chocolate looked like it was had only half the dye in it.
I could use some sand, cream or natural---we want to attempt dying to rich chocolate if at all possible.

I am not to far from Joliet, and I frequent the Hanthingy and Jo ann fabrics that surround me. I started my costume a bit late for the fabric season ( July) and was told that the fabrics I was looking for generally came in only around Feb and are not reordered after August because they are considered "summer" fabrics. I have also heard rumor that the fabric received at Hanthingy is quiet different from Jo ann. I bought out Hanthingy of their white and creme, and am thinking of returning to see if they have any black crinkled cotton left. Jo Ann has a light tan, black, an a nice green in the crinkled cotton, but its $6 a yard if anyone is interested!

What kind of fabric were you looking for? Because there is nothing close to where I am in Florida I've mostly been getting my fabric online.
Unfortunately you have run into the forum censor. It will not allow you to type certain words that it considers questionable. So, when you want to write Hanc*ock Fabrics, the Forum turns it into Hanthingy Fabrics. Strange, but true.

I was wondering why it did that! I must have gone back 3 times to try and fix it with no avail!
I was hoping to find the Indian Homespun Fabric they say is used in the movie, but the closest I could figure to it is the Crinkled Cotton

I believe it has long been the consensus that the Indian Homespun was custom made for the film.
I use either linen blend with cotton or raw (noil) silk. I usually get them on line, though sometimes JoAnn has linen and with the 40-50% off coupon, it's not too badly priced. Calcutta cloth is excellent, comfortable, 100% cotton and cheap
I've taken to using the crinkle cotton for my undertunics for warm weather or indoors.

I agree that crinkle cotton works best for price and comfort for undertunics. I have also had good luck with using silk crinkle gauze for an undertunic. It can be thin, but it's still strong and I doubled it at the sleeves and collar and it came out very well and quite comfortable. However, it has so much stretch that it's hard to sew and fit.
Most crinkle cotton would probably be too light for a tunic, though I did find some heavy crinkle cotton that made a good tunic, that that's fairly uncommon.
Osnaburg cotton has a nice rough texture, makes good tunics and is cheap, but I have only seen it in basic off-white.

I've seen Osnaburg in brown, but it wasn't 100% cotton
