Ok, can anyone figure out what this might be? I'm thinking that maybe it's to keep the costume in place under the robe when they're doing an action sequence... or maybe in the water... This was in the longer documentary on the dvd called "Within a Minute". (click on image to enlarge)

Well there is a bit of wire work, might have been for that, like the scene in the elevator shaft

Yeah, I think it's a harness for the flying stunts or for safety if they have to film things high off the ground and for those impossibly high Jedi jumps.
He's holding his arm straight out in the air, but his sleeve is hung up on something. I assume it's a wire.

Well the documentary was all about how they made one scene--- the scene on Mustafar where that mechanical arm thing breaks off and falls into the lava, then they run up it. But they had stunt guys doing the running up, and the tightrope walking and all. But Ewan and Hayden did do a bit of it... the less dangerous bits.
But it looks like it's made from the same fabric as the tunic, just reinforced... maybe to hide the harness?

It's an interesting one to be sure... I don't think that it's to conceal a wire harness, as they normally attatch at the sides of the waist, and would be easy to do with a Jedi belt. If Obi-Wan's tabards came past the obi at the back, I'd think that that's what they were, just held up for some reason, but to me, it looks like they're doing something with the obi itself (although I wouldn't like to say what)

It looks like the sleeves are standing out because he's holding them in his fists, but it also looks like there are strips of velcro from shoulder to waist under the tabbards (very even lighter coloured strips down the front of the tunic that end under the obi, although it looks like they are on top of these tabbards and that is another layer of something that is going over the tabbards and covered in that fabric, also seems like small buckles at the ensd of what they are putting on him) and also on the tabbards inside on the 1st shot, which might explain why they stay put. Not all flying rigs attach at the waist, some work from mid back and also from the shoulders or crotch depending on balence and the spin required, we used different ones in "Tommy" and "Swing" and I've seen others used in Circus act as well. My guess is that it's to cover the harness or something like one.

Ah, I didn't notice what he was doing with his hands. Yeah, he's holding his sleeves up, presumably to keep them out of the way.
The "harness" is just about the same color as the tunic, so it won't show, but it looks like they're putting it on over the tabards which seems odd. I would think that the tabards on a Jedi costume would be perfect for covering up things like a harness. Perhaps they're just testing the lengths of things before really putting it on?

Yeah, I noticed that when I watched the DVD too, and I'm stumped. The most probable explanation is test fitting a harness, and they just used a shot from a different scene (like when Dooku's choking Obi Wan) to show how attentive the wardrobe people are... but I digress. Still puzzling...

The only explanation I can think of is that they're just testing the fit of the harness before they actually put it on, so it doesn't matter if it's over the tabards. They'll put it on under the tabards when they're sure it's adjusted right. That's my current guess for now anyway.
