Well, I just bought some material and I need to start cutting my tunic. Does anyone have a good pattern I can use, for an Obi Wan style tunic? I can pretty much work out the obi and tabbards myself, but im not sure how to cut the tunic so that when it folds over itself in the front one side wont be shorter or off angle than the other? EDIT: Here is a quick sketch of what im thinking of doing, will this work? img244.echo.cx/img244/7578/tunicidea5ys.jpg

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm cutting out the sleeves seperately and attatching them, both to be more screen accurate and because my material isn't wide enough
Ive seen padawans guide, but they way they cut out the V strip would make it look strange when the two halves cross over, wouldnt it?

Yes it would make the front of the tunic look odd...I wonder why they have you take a piece out ? It seems to me that you want more fabric in the front so it dosen't pull and look odd. Also I would make the tunic a little longer than waist length and add the skirt part otherways you'll have problems with the bottom hitching up and looking wierd. In the movies the bottom of the tunics are quite full...If you cut it streight like that pic shows it would have to be open on the sides and that's not accurate for this at all... If I was you I'd use an old sheet and experiment to see what way looks good on you. I've done a few costumes without the use of a pattern and it is a good idea to try out your ideas on cheep Wal-Mart type fabric before you cut into something more costly. (Yay for cheep 1$ a yard cotton)
Peace, Jun.

The pattern that Mon Jas reccomended will work best, it is essentially a knock off of a Jedi costume. The Tabbards are basically 2 straight strips & the obi can be either a sraight band or the wrap & tie type, it's under the belt. The striaght one is quickest and easiest, also appears to be accurate. I usually skip their neckband peice & cut a strip of self bias that is at least 3 inches wide, 4 if you're using 1/2 inch seam allowance & just do a striaght bias band around the front & back of neck to the front again (all the way around, hem to hem) least hassle & fairly accurate as well. Undretunic the same, but with tighter sleeves & slightly narrower bias band on neck.

well, I've started my tunic using my pattern, and so far it is going very well. The back could have been a bit bigger (its a tad snug around the hips), but the front has made up for it, and when my belt pulls it all together it should bunch up pretty well...
I'm using this really rigid material, I think it is meant for manchester, the tunic might be a tad stiff, but not noticeably so i don't think. The tabbards/obi however look fantastic with this material, and sit brilliantly. I'll post some pics when I'm done.
Arrgh still have to find material to make a robe!
