Hello everybody, I'm new here, but I think some of you may know me from some of the other prop, and costume boards. Well, I need some help, but first just a bit of setup here. I wanted to do a different costume for each day of C III, and I wanted to do a theme, so I'm going as Obi-wan. Since Obi-wan was bast on the classic Wizard archetype, and since Gorge did the prequels after the OT, I've decided to take a que from Merlin, and age Obi-wan in reavers. :lol (EP 4 day one, EP 3 day two, and so on)
After months of research, I've got it almost all figured out, except the for the following:
1. What fabric should I use for the EP II/III tunic, tabards, and obi? I know the fabric in those 2 films were custom made, but what is the closest thing to it, that I could probably find?
2. What was the Long tunic, tabard, and obi, made of, in EP 5 (old Obi-wan)?
3. What is the best pattern for the EP II/III Tunic? I found More sites then I could ever have imagined on making these items, and so many of them suggest different things. I know I will probably have to modify an existing pattern, but witch one? I want these pieces to be as accurate as posable.
4. Same as question 3, but for the EP 5 long tunic.
BTW, I'm going to use the EP II costume for the EP I day, and just do the here differently. I know it's not accurate, but I just can't see doing another costume when there so similar, and I like the EP II so much better then the EP I. However, I want this to be as accurate as posable on the costumes I do, do.
Thank you. Jason

Crinkle COtton works jsut great for those. It's lgithweight, has the same look and is easy to care for washing wise.
His pants are stadnard docekrs. Boots, you can nab boots that look liek that and modify them with the straps or spend a mint to getthe right brand. (be $200-350 a pair but costume made to your feet and take 2-3 month sbefore they'er on your doorstep and on your feet.)
If you'er happy with th4e Crinkle cotton as your fabric hit the Jo-Ann's or stores simialr to thsoe now to get some.

1.) I'd pick something with texture to it; a homespun type of cotton would be good and affordable.
2.) I have some vague memory about hearing that it was wool, but I can't be sure. You will have to stress it once you make the outfit. There was more than one stain on Obi-wan's tunic in Ep IV. I'm sure that the Alec Guiness Obi-wan outfit has been in some traveling museum shows.
3.) I'd go with the pattern that has the simplest construction and the fewest peices. It will be easier to modidy.
4.) Same as for 3.). It looked like he was just wearing a turtleneck shirt under the long tunic. And his boots are very old and scuffed. And his belt is a simple, 1" type with a plain buckle.
Your best friend are the DVDs for costume reference. I do not ever remember seeing any reference to what they actually used in the movies for any of Obi-wan's outfits. Does anyone know of any references to that? Would that be on the star.wars web site?

Ep IV Obi Wan was made from Raw silk & distressed several ways, cost wise silk noile is pretty good, because the raw wild type they used is very expensive & hard to come buy, very slubby & thick. The undergarment was a Djalaba, it's a very simple tunic pattern with a straight collar band & a placket with buttons that are covered in the front, there are 4 small buttons the placket is about 8 inches long. The topstiching job could have been better. Try Alter Years for a mens middle eastern long tunic, but you might find one in a local middle eastern garment store, they still wear them, but mostly they are white.

Dharma.com has raw slk/silk noil pretty reasonable in the natural /cream shade. It's cheaper by the bolt but you can select the yardage. It also comes predyed in black but it costs more.

'Ol Ben Kenobi in black, nah, but if they had a good brown, that would be cool.
