To any of you seamstresses/tailors out there: I was considering making a new Jedi costume and was wanting to combine some of the elements of the prequel trilogy with that of the original trilogy. What I have in mind is a costume that utilizes the basic Obi-Wan Kenobi/Mace Windu/Qui-Gon Jinn costume, but eliminates the tabards in favor of a vest that is similar to what is worn by Luke Skywalker during the rescue at Jabba's Palace. Here's a picture from the Padawan's Guide: www.padawansguide.com/BMA/luke_rotj1.jpgIt would be essentially the same construction as this, the vest with the obi/sash running around the midsection. The main difference would be that it would be in the more earthy tones of the PT, probably a brown a bit lighter than the typical robe. So, Nova, Leda, Schph or anyone else out there, I need suggestions on material, manner of construction, possible patterns to use, etc. Obi-Wan's Jedi Academy had a pretty good tutorial on this costume, but the site has since closed down Any and all help would be most appreciated!

That link works. Obi-Wan's Academy says it's made of a cotton wool blend. The photo on the Padawan's guide looks like it could be linen, though such small photos can be decieving.
OBA says "any vest pattern". Not quite, though a vest pattern is a good place to start. There's a detail with the neckline that isn't simply a vest. It's higher in the back than a vest usually is. It has the same look as my Jedi tunic (which is made from a judo gee-type pattern) though I can't tell if it's got the band around the the front. Of course, it also doesn't cross-over.
Thinking on-line here. I would probably alter the gee pattern to make it smaller so as not to cross over at the front. That would give the neckline at the back as seen on the Padawan's Guide photo.

I had an Idea for an alternet costume to my basic one . here is where I got the idea. Kinda from Kai Rhann`s site seeing his other style robes and use of bracers. which I also have . Well this is the description of my version. Would remind ya of a jerkin with the beaver like tails that Indians had. The sleeves on the top are cut at an angle and the beaver tails cover the crotch and butt area that idea came from Kotor. The character Bastilla. Also old Knights of the days of forged weapons had something kinda the same I believe . Anyway the colors I am using are beige and cocoa brown. This is just for a short sleeve top the rest of my Jedi costume would be the original style.Of course i would'nt wear tabbards with it .
guess you could call it a prequel era style

It will be interesting to see it. I'm trying to picture beaver tails, are you talking about the flaps?

Yes Nova the beavertails are indeed the flaps. I took a cocoa brown sweat shirt. Cut the sleeves at like 45 degrees towards the arm pit area . The remaining sleeve material I used for the tails. By undoing the seam at the bottom edge of the sleeve . This gave me a keyhole kinda shape. Which I cut down to my liking and added a beige keyhole shape but smaller over the top . Keyhole just being a something like a square but with one side long the other shorter . Next the keyhole piece was attached to the belt area of the tunic . Longer side closest to the belt line. The result was a tunic that looks like the tails that Indians had the covered the crotch and butt areas but there pants still were still seen on the sides Anyway , if anyone knows the game Knights of the Old Republic . Bastila has a similar set of tails on her costume but longer I am still trying to get some pictures to see what you think you can see Bastila Shan here jediencyclopedia.150m.com/bastilashan.html

The flaps are generally called breechclout, I thought you might mean those. Primitive underwear, take a long strip of cloth ot soft leather, pull ends between a belt and flap over, let hang.

Sort of, but it was usually with the leggings and those have no iddle, that's why the breechclout, that was before the white man & Christianity changed the style.
