A friend sent me this, esp. with Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince coming out July 16th and how the books have almost been censored before. The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) is inviting booksellers to insert a flier about the efforts to censor books in the Harry Potter series in the new "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", which goes on sale July 16. From 1999 to 2003, the Harry Potter books were challenged more than any other titles, according to the American Library Association. The ABFFE flier tells the story of a 2002 banning in Arkansas that was successfully challenged in court by two parents. The flier also invites kids to learn more about censorship by visiting the ABFFE online resource for children's involvement with freedom of expression, kidSPEAK! To print copies of the flier, go to: www.abffe.com/HarryPotterBan.pdf

Thanks for that. Sent it off to a few friends, one of whom is a priest of the Church of Sweden. I was going to link to his page with his arguement against those who would ban it on religious grounds, but his site is down.

Thanks. If anyone is going to any Harry Potter book buying do bring some along. And put up at libraries near you and book stores you go to. Pam

Well, if they're trying to censor/ban it, they aren't having much luck, it's already outsold the last book, just on preorders from what I read in the paper the other day, let them censor that! That's just another type of terrorism and should be stomped out. Wish I could read it, but this just won't open that.

Personally I don't care for the Harry Potter movies and I have not read any of the books, but I'm curious, why are they sensoring it... is it just because of the magic element or is there more?
If it's the disregarding authority issue... that's hardly a leg to stand on... and tell me what kid has not at some point been curious about witches and magic and stuff?

It is the Witch craft thing ... but the same people will argue that Lord of the Rings is a upstanding and holds good Christian morals, but are not there wizards in that too?

Of course in Harry Potter, they celebrate Christian holidays like Christmas & Easter, go figure! I'm quite fond of the HP series and I figure that anything that gets kids that don't like to read to open a book and read it and then start to read other books is a VERY GOOD THING!

It's amazing what will freak some people out... like worrying about a spider when there's a bear in your house... or something But that's a very good way to look at it Nova... anything that gets a kid to read is good. Well almost anything!

I'm not a Harry Potter fan either. Not too keen on the movies, not because of the story but of the lightening in them is so dark I physcially can't SEE the iamges. I cna hear them talking but see no image or just fleeting shadows.
I've seen the size of those books, some being OVER 700 pages. That's as large as some college text books. And defiantly as large as my theological texts.
