Most of the theories I've read regarding what a "real" light saber would have been within the universe of Star Wars have involved blades made of lasers or plasma, but I'd like to throw out another theory that doesn't require physics to jump through as many hoops. a "Force Field"! In fact, the idea was thought up in Isaac Asimov's 1950's juvinal Sci-Fi series about "David 'Lucky' Starr - Space Ranger" where there was a weapon I believe he called an "energy knife" that consisted of a hilt that projected a force field aprox. 6" long and 1 molecule thick that could cut through anything but another force field. Such a weapon could easily be pumped up bit into a "Light Saber". It also has the advantage that, unlike lasers and plasma, a force field doesn't actually exist in the "real world" & therefore doesn't have any inconvenient physical properties to get in the way!
