Hi everyone.
I just sent in an application to join today and it looks like it was approved.
Im from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and about 6 months of the year, it looks and feels like Hoth outside my front doorstep (Yay for -45c weather, with windchill)
It was a bit of a roundabout path that brought me here.
About 7 months ago now, i was looking around at costuming ideas to be able to wear to comic cons, found out about the rebel legion, and looked into putting together an Obi-Wan TPM costume, as ive had a heck of time growing a beard. Unfortunately i discovered that the obi wan tpm hilt is incredibly difficult to find. The master replicas ones were a very limited run.
Looking around, I found a site that builds a replica of the obi tpm hilt, albiet a bit larger.
However in finding it, and ordering it, I discovered that it was rated for dueling and sparring without breaking. Years ago I used to take various martial arts, and did a fair bit of weapons practice with sais, staff, bokken, and shinai.
Immediately I called up an old sparring partner and told him about the lightsabers, and he ordered one, and we have been sparring and training on a weekly basis using these rather than our old weapons, for about the last six months.
We actually have close to twenty of us that do so now, and for the last four months or so, Ive actually been building custom lightsabers for friends, or buddies on facebook that want something a bit more specialized in design.
The lightsaber addiction sort of snowballed as you can see.
We have mixed a fair bit of various martial arts with it, different chinese and japanese forms, and even some german longsword, and are working on learning segments of the various fights from the movies to use as a cardio workout.
(there is a 9 strike exchange between obi wan and maul in TPM that if you do it about 5 times in a row at full speed you feel nearly ready to die)
At the local comic con some of us decided to gear up in costume for the fun of it.
Rather than a normal jedi robe i wanted something a bit different, so I had a friend stateside make me a set of jedi robes based off of a custom corran horn action figure that i saw online.
The robes turned out great, are comfortable and lightweight, a wonderful dark hunter green colour, and move really well when swinging a saber around, running, jumping, tumbling..etc.
I also had a different friend make me a nice brown overrobe, its a few shades lighter than what you tend to see in the movies, but she managed to find a great medium weight wool to make it out of. Nice large sleeves and hood, very very very warm (again i live on hoth pretty much, so thats a must have)
Unfortunately there arent many other jedi costumers near me, however we do have a 20 member + strong clan of mandalorian mercs that Ive been in touch with. So hopefully I can hit up some events with them in the future.
Thanks for reading my essay lol.
